AIGA event in Albuquerque w/ House Industries

The importance of design in today's world is tough to overestimate.  Engaging and connecting with the design community could help make the difference in getting an idea or product out there.

And their parties can be lots of fun.

House Industries has long been a personal favorite, so I'm guessing this event will be especially cool.

Hello, everyone!

I am a new media designer here in Albuquerque, and had very much wanted to attend BarCamp, but was out of town on business. Hopefully next year.

In the meantime, I wanted to pass along some information that I think will be of interest to at least some of you. I am Vice President of the local chapter of AIGA (the American Institute of Graphic Arts.) We hold design-related events in both Albuquerque and Santa Fe, and have one down here this week featuring a presentation by two of the owners of House Industries ( http://www.houseind.com), a Delaware-based independent type foundry, illustration studio and design firm that markets unique fonts and artwork worldwide. Noted for its typographic synthesis of popular culture, House Industries creates functional fonts and lettering that permeate every facet of our visual landscape.

Google SketchUp Demo @ Redfish

I'd recommend attending pretty much anything at Redfish -- and Google SketchUp is one of the neater tools available today...

Shawn Barr -- Clark University / Redfish Group

TITLE: Building Simply with Google SketchUp

TIME: Wednesday, September 26, 12:30p

LOCATION: Redfish Conference Room, 624 Agua Fria Street
Lunch will be available for $5

Abstract: Google SketchUp is open-source software that is useful for creating
3-D models. SketchUp provides a toolbox containing basic tools for drawing,
modifying, and texturing 3-D objects. Extensions to these functions can be made
within SketchUp using the Ruby API (Application Programming Interface). By
giving an informal demonstration in SketchUp, I hope to demonstrate both
SketchUp's accessibility to new users and capacity to export 3D models that can
be used as agent views in ABM environments such as NetLogo.

2007 SWGLFF Special Events

Another big event next weekend -- both in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.  Roberto and the gang have really made this one of New Mexico's most important high visibility festivals -- and this year it features the New Mexico premiere of Save Me (which was shot here in NM).
...

2007 SPECIAL EVENTS ARE TRULY SPECIAL!

Albuquerque, NM–The Southwest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival is proud to announce a plethora of special events during its 2007 run!

Actors, actresses and directors are flying in from all over to be a part of the fifth year of SWGLFF, getting the word out on their films while having a great time.

First up is the Opening Night Party, to be held September 28th  in Nob Hill at Albuquerque's most Social Club(Call our hotline for location) Following the screening of the The Bubble, enjoy the music of DJ's Eve, Paul and Kryst and nosh on delicious food from Kanome, Ambrozia and Jasmine Thai & Sushi House.

The next night, be at the Kimo Theater downtown for a screening of Save Me, a New-Mexico filmed feature starring Chad Allen, who will be in attendance. Then grab your halo–it's off to the District for the After Party, with DJ Delorenzo and DJ Stitch to keep you dancing throughout the night.

And what would SWGLFF be without two of its most popular events–the Queer Brunch in Albuquerque and a day of women's films in Santa Fe. Don't miss out on great food at Zinc on September 30th  before heading over to the Guild Cinema for the amazing Youth Shorts collection.

Two major parties that cannot be missed this year involve two very different sectors of the GLBT community. First up is the Dare to Be Bear party at Sidewinders on September 30, following the screening of Bears. Mr. International Bear himself, Fernan Royo, will be in attendance for the festivities. And firewomyn.com presents the biggest all-girl party in town on October 3rd, as Martini Grille plays host to the Itty Bitty Titty After Party, following the screening of the raucous Itty Bitty Titty Committee. Film star Guinevere Turner will be attending. Don't miss out!

To wrap it all up this year, Laru Ni Hati is hosting the closing night party on October 4th. Get down and discuss your favorite films of the festival–just in time for this year's awards to be announced. Thanks to the Benoit Team, Albuquerque Film Office, NMAS and M-Power, the Southwest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival Awards are back for a second year! Don't forget to vote for your favorite!

2007 SOUTHWEST GAY AND LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL

2007 Southwest Gay & Lesbian Film Festival

Posted: September 11, 2007

"2007 SOUTHWEST GAY AND LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL"

CLOSET CINEMA PRESENTS THE BEST OF GLBT CINEMA

September 28th - October 4th

Two Cities with over 75 Great Films

ALBUQUERQUE and SANTA FE, NM-- The Southwest Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, sponsored by Here! and Sky Vodka and produced by Closet Cinema, kicks off its 2007 run on September 28 and wraps up on October 4. Venues this year include the historic Guild Cinema, the Southwest Film Center, UA Highridge and, for the first time, the Kimo Theatre in downtown Albuquerque. Santa Fe filmgoers will be treated to screenings at the UA DeVargas. With 75 feature-length and short film entries from 19 countries around the world, the festival has become both the largest film festival in Albuquerque and the most supported and fastest growing film happening in the state of New Mexico.

Opening SWGLFF this year is THE BUBBLE, an Israeli film about forbidden love on the wrong sides of war. Following the film, Nob Hill is the place to be as the Opening Night Party rocks Albuquerque’s most Social Club, kicking the festival off with a bang!

This year’s centerpiece film, SAVE ME, was filmed in New Mexico and stars Chad Allen as a sex and drug addicted gay man sent to a Christian “rehabilitation” center bent on turning him straight. Co-starring Judith Light and Robert Gant, and screening at the Kimo Theatre, it is sure to be one of the most talked-about events of SWGLFF 2007!

The crowd-and-critic favorite SHELTER closes the festival, playing at the Guild on October 4. Immediately following is the closing night bash at Laru Ni Hati.

In between these films are 7 days of something for everyone: high camp, serious drama, and multiple opportunities to socialize at near-nightly parties. Back for a second year is the ever-popular Audience Awards, where attendees can vote for the best films of the festival. A festival first is the presence of actors and actresses from some of the films--SAVE ME stars Robert Gant and Chad Allen will be in attendance at the Kimo screening and the follow up party at the District. The fantastic Guinevere Turner will also be at this year’s festival, promoting her role in the hilarious ITTY BITTY TITTY COMMITTEE.

Festival Director Roberto Appicciafoco says the fabulous fifth year is by far the biggest and best SWGLFF yet. “Becoming one of the largest film festivals in the state of New Mexico after just five short years shows the level of commitment of New Mexicans to GLBT issues. I’m excited to have stars like Chad Allen, Robert Gant and Guinevere Turner here to help celebrate our half-decade of showcasing great GLBT cinema.”

The returning Audience Awards, a festival favorite, would not have been possible this year without the generous sponsorship of Albuquerque Film Office, NMAS, Steve Benoit, and MPower.

Festival passes, punch cards and tickets will be available to purchase, beginning September 14, at Burning Paradise Video, 800 Central Avenue SW, and Self Serve Sexuality Resource Center, 3904B Central Avenue SE, in Albuquerque. The Santa Fe box office will be located at Backroad Pizza, 1807 2nd Street. New for 2007 is the option of purchasing tickets online! Program guides with complete ticket information, schedule of films and events can be found at ticket outlets and other locations. GFX Cafe @ UNM

The next GFX Café Seminar (tomorrow) should be great, especially for those of us who couldn't get to SIGGRAPH (and even those who could).

"ECE 118" is located on the UNM Main Campus -- the Electrical and Computer Engineering Building is toward the SW corner of campus, near the intersection of Copper and University Blvd., NE. Parking can be tricky (and these can be crowded) so arrive early!

(Another quick note: the Albuquerque/Rio Grande IGDA kick-off event is being planned for mid-late October. email me directly at ewhitmore@gmail.com to get involved.)

GFX Café Seminar Friday September 7, 2007
12noon, ECE 118

Food will be served

NM Fulldome Project w/ Gronk hits LA

Nice write-up in the LA Times on "Gronk's BrainFlame," the animated full-dome piece that grew out of LA-based artist Gronk's work with UNM's Arts Technology Center (precursor to the ARTS Lab). Imagined by Gronk, animated by our own Hue Walker.
"Welcome into Gronk's brain and to a powerful new artist medium," states the promotional material for an unusual, 14-minute animated short film that makes its West Coast debut next Saturday at the Glendale Community College planetarium.

"Gronk's BrainFlame" visualizes the creative process at a cellular level by entering the mind of the artist at the moment ideas are born. Gronk, known for his dramatic installations and performance pieces, took two years to develop the digital project, considered a cutting-edge experiment in the melding of art, science and technology.

Using 180-degree projection, viewers are drawn into an animated, otherworldly landscape with sprouting pod-like forms and faceless, alien-like figures that move about under a canopy composed of squiggly lines and ambiguous shapes instead of stars and planets.
"I always thought that a living culture is one that experiments and tries new things," he [Gronk] told me. "A dead culture is one that stays the same. I'd rather be part of a living culture that always has something new for people to view."

West Coast premiere of "Gronk's BrainFlame," next Saturday [9/8] at Glendale Community College, Planetarium and Science Center, 1500 N. Verdugo Road, Glendale. Screenings at 2, 2:30, 3 and 3:30 p.m. Art exhibit and book signing by the artist, 2-4:30 p.m., with a reception catered by Casablanca Mexican restaurant. Screening ticket reservations required; RSVP by Thursday to Bryan Robinson at (310) 825-7716 or brobinson@ support.ucla.edu.

NM Comics Event in Santa Fe

The connections between comics, graphic novels and movies are a little hard to miss these days (the Spiderman series and "Will Eisner's The Spirit" come to mind) -- and the strengths of New Mexico's comics and sci-fi scenes don't seem all that well tapped by our local media industry.

If you're interested in those connections, you might want to check this out...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BEST-SELLING LOCAL AUTHOR DAVID MORRELL SET TO UNLEASH HIS FIRST COMIC BOOK PROJECT – THE LAST “CAPTAIN AMERICA” STORY

(Santa Fe, NM – August 27, 2007) Fans of best-selling novelist David Morrell (whose character John Rambo made his first appearance in 1972’s “First Blood”) will get to read his next story with pictures attached. “Captain America: The Chosen” -- Morrell’s first-ever comic book work -- will be released as a six-issue mini-series from Marvel Comics, beginning Thursday, September 6th, 2007.

A fan of realistic, gritty comic work (such as Frank Miller’s famed “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns”), Morrell will be telling a Captain America story set in
Afghanistan post 9-11, exploring the psychological impact of, “Being a superhero in today's world, especially a superhero named after the United States,” as he recently told website Comic Book Resources.

Also, Morrell had written this series without knowing Marvel’s plans for Steve “Captain America” Rogers following last year’s sprawling “Civil War” epic. So this story will be set sometime in the recent past, before Rogers’ untimely demise.

Morrell will be signing copies of “Captain America: The Chosen” at True Believers Comics & Gallery on Saturday, September 29, from 12 noon-3 p.m. “At that time, the first 2 issues should be on the shelf,” explains Chris Diestler, True Believers’ General Manager, “but fans who wish to get the whole series signed can purchase a voucher ahead of time and we’ll have David sign the rest of them as they come out.”
True Believers Comics & Gallery is now located at 801-B Cerrillos, between the railroad tracks and Guadalupe Street. Please call during business hours for more info: (505) 992-TRUE.

The comic series will be lavishly painted by up-and-comer Mitch Breitweiser, with variant collector covers by Travis Charest. Each installment will have a cover price of $3.99. A collection of all the issues is projected for 2008.
