Santa Fe Film Festival Continues to Grow
to Grow in Diversity and Quality
Eighth Season Takes Place November 28 to December 2, 2007
Santa Fe, NM, October 30, 2007: For 2007 the eighth annual Santa Fe Film Festival (ISFFF) will feature more than 85 programs encompassing over 230 films, shorts, and features of all genres, themes, and topics. The five-day festival has grown in scope and stature each year and is a high point of Santa Fe’s fall calendar with a long list of events, activities, and social functions.
The festival is divided into seven series: Independent Spirits, Making it Reel, Eye on the World, Art Matters, Southwest Showcase and Gala films from the major distributors as well as retrospective titles drawn from the careers of the festival’s annual Luminaria tributees. Indicative of the festival’s reputation is National Geographic’s role as a major programming partner, bringing its All Roads Film Project to the festival for the third consecutive year.
This season the All Roads project will present more than 20 films made by indigenous artists from around the globe, more than fifteen of whom will be in attendance at the festival. All Roads will also host a photography exhibit featuring works by four artists, who will also be in attendance, at the Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA) during an opening on Wednesday the 18th at 5:00pm. National Geographic and the SFFF will stage a concert with the world-famous Toureg group, Tiniwaren at the Lensic Performing Arts Center on Friday, November 30th, at 7pm.
“In support of the All Roads Film Project, we travel all over the world to seek out compelling new artists and films, but coming to Santa Fe is always one of the highlights of our year,” said Francene Blythe, Director of the All Roads Film Project.
New this year is a series in partnership with the New York Jewish Film Festival, part of the Jewish Museum of New York. A quartet of features and documentaries, which were unveiled earlier this year at the New York Jewish Film Festival’s presentation at Lincoln Center in New York, will be shown on Tuesday the 27th and Wednesday the 28th at the Film Center and then again later in the week.
The SFFF will return to the beautiful Lensic Performing Arts Center with programming Wednesday through Sunday, including films, music, and the Milagro Awards Ceremony. Events will also be held at the CCA, The Film Center, The Jean Cocteau Film Museum, De Vargas theaters, plus The Screen and Tipton Hall at the College of Santa Fe. New for this year will be events at the Armory for the Arts and the Kathryn O’Keeffe Theater at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture. Downtown Santa Fe restaurants will provide venues for nightly parties sponsored by the Santa Fe Film Festival featuring music and entertainment from an impressive group of filmmakers, artists, and musicians.
The educational component of the festival continues to expand as Industry professionals from Pixar, Lucasfilms, Panavision, Kodak, UNM, and Albuquerque Studios among others take part in panels and labs throughout the event.
The festival will bestow its Luminaria Award for lifetime achievement to Alanis Obomsawin, a documentary filmmaker whose powerful and uncompromising works address the many conflicts faced by contemporary Native peoples and to Marina Goldovskaya, who made the first Russian documentary to expose the horrors of Stalin’s concentration camps. Also, Actor Rutger Hauer of BLADERUNNER and LADYHAWKE has been named one of this year’s Luminaria Tributees along with husband and wife filmmakers John Bailey, Director of Photography and Carol Littleton, editor.
Even as one of the fastest growing film festivals in the country, the SFFF remains accessible and intimate with a well-deserved reputation for diverse events and thoughtful programming. Tickets go on sale November 9 in the box office at 519 Cerrillos Road: $10 for individual admission, $75 for a ten-pack of tickets. Festival passes are on sale now for $300 for an All Films pass and $450 for the All Festival pass which includes access to the daily Heineken / CBS Happy Hour at Hotel Santa Fe, all Nightly Parties, and the reception for the Milagro Awards Ceremony. Edward Tufte Course in Albuquerque (12/4)
Hey everyone...
I don't think Edward Tufte hit New Mexico on his last trip through the US -- but this is a great opportunity.
Edward Tufte is Professor Emeritus at Yale University, where he taught courses in statistical evidence, information design, and interface design. He has written eight books, including Beautiful Evidence, Visual Explanations, Envisioning Information, The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, and Data Analysis for Politics and Policy. He wrote, designed, and self-published four books on information design, which have won 40 awards for content and design. The New York Times described ET as "The Leonardo da Vinci of data." Martin Kemp in Nature described ET as "the world's leading analyst of graphic information."
UNM's Information Architecture group is teaming up to get some group rates -- I think groups of ten or more can get the price down to $285 per person (otherwise it is $380). But this is... really valuable, and also a great opportunity to link up with some of the cooler people in our neighborhood.
More on the Tufte course here ( http://www.edwardtufte.com/tufte/courses). The one day course that cover the following topics:

TITLE:
Immersive Experiential Content: Hologram to Holodeck
by Pete Rogina, WorldScape
ABSTRACT:
The Star Trek Holodeck is often heralded as the holy grail of
immersive media. Join Peter Rogina, President of WorldScape, for an
interactive discussion on the driving vision and technical challenges
of enabling real world-based immersive imaging. This talk will cover
topics ranging from fundamental enabling technical concepts to
practical considerations for the proliferation of experiences to the
in-home masses.
BIO:
Peter Rogina received a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Stevens
Institute of Technology in 1984. He is an accomplished holographer,
stereo photographer, and has spoken at and/or chaired numerous
industry events related to Virtual Reality as a catalyst for human
comprehension. During the early days of his transition from being a
holographic artist to developing a medium based upon real-world
experiences, Mr. Rogina realized the importance of both burgeoning
compression technologies and advanced computing technologies and
architectures. In January 2000, he began full-time efforts with
WorldScape, a company he formed in 1994 to pursue real world-based
immersive imaging.
Prior to WorldScape, Mr. Rogina was with Hewlett Packard where he
was, among other things, responsible for starting and managing a
telecommunications systems business in the U.S. that grew to over
$100M. Upon leaving HP in the late 90's, he ran a publicly trading
wavelet compression company and then was President of Cambridge
Parallel Processing, a SIMD computing company.
WorldScape has gone on to secure numerous government contracts
totaling over $6 Million for the development and demonstration of
advanced image, signal, and sensor processing hardware and
software. Complemented by private investment and other commercial
business, WorldScape has been developing a real-world capture system
based on large arrays of high-resolution imagers and a real-time
scene reconstruction engine based on scaled-SIMD technology. The
goal is to capture and deliver photorealistic immersive
experiences. With an initial focus on the enabling technologies for
practical hardware implementations, the Company established it's
logo, "If a picture's worth a thousand words, what's reality worth?"
WorldScape is expanding into New Mexico and expects to continue its
leadership in the areas of capture and processing hardware systems
for government and commercial applications. One of Mr. Rogina's
goals is to travel around the world and produce meaningful
experiences that leverage the power of the new medium to educate,
entertain, and catalyze social change.

2 More Really Cool Events!
(but there is another post about the Elaine Avila reading this Sunday from Tricklock here)
And there's also Pixel Vision with Bryan Konefsky (which I'm pretty sure is full), but...
One of the cool people and groups that Tricklock helped make me aware of is John Sandlin and Le Chat Lunatique. They're probably my favorite live band at the moment, and they're also the driving force behind this weekend's 2nd Annual Django Fest, this Friday, Saturday and Sunday at various locations in Albuquerque. Le Chat plays Friday at the St. Clair Winery and Saturday night at Puccini's Golden West, but there look to be lots of good gigs, some of them free. Check Le Chat's site for more info, or visit http://www.mantouchenorthamerica.com to register.
Also this weekend, and featured heavily in the current Alibi are the 24 HOUR COMICS events at the Harwood Art Center in Albuquerque and at True Believers Comics and Gallery in Santa Fe. For more info, read the Alibi article, or visit http://www.7000bc.org or http://24hourcomics.com
Requiem for Billy the Kid Premieres @ the Spencer Theater
A French film about the legendary outlaw Billy the Kid will premier in New Mexico on Nov. 3.
"Requiem for Billy the Kid" was filmed primarily in Lincoln County in 2004 and meshes the narrative form with traditional documentary filmmaking to explore the Kid's career and death in 1881 by Sheriff Pat Garrett. Actor Kris Kristofferson voices Billy the Kid, who gives his own account of the evening he was killed while the audience follows the sheriff on the screen.
The premier will be at the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts in Alto near Ruidoso. The production is a presentation of Jean-Jacques Beineix and Cargo Films in association with Western Films. The producer is Carine Leblanc and the director is Anne Feinsilber. It was written by Feinsilber and Jean-Christophe Cavallin. The film also is an entry in this year's Cannes Film Festival.
The show time is 2 p.m. on Nov. 3. For more information, go to www.spencertheater.com or call toll free, (888) 818-7872.

Biz-Plan Development Workshop (AI2V)
I've mentioned this to several people I know in the wider community -- but after a good talk at lunch I'm wondering if there are others out there in the Media Industries community who'd like to get in on an intensive Business Plan Development workshop that runs November 28-December 1st in Albuquerque.
As part of our economic development mission at UNM, ARTS Lab has been supporting the NCIIA's Invention to Venture workshops through our work with High Desert Venture Camp (HDVC). This year, the folks at NCIIA proposed that HDVC host a new intensive advanced B-Plan workshop that they're working with school on nationally. HDVC and UNM was chosen as the site for the Southwest region.
From our perspective at ARTS Lab and at HDVC, this is a solid opportunity to take a business plan to the next level -- to win the UNM Business Plan Competition, get a slot in TVC's Capital Equity Symposium, and, hopefully get a big venture the funding to become a successful business.
As we've talked about -- and focused on during more than one Coronado Ventures Forum -- getting more media start-ups going throughout New Mexico is a big priority. If you have a team -- or know of one -- with a media or technology-related business plan, please take a look at the attached -- or visit HDVC on the web ( Http://www.highdesertventuirecamp.com) -- and email us at hdvc@unm.edu
Best wishes
Eric

AIGA today, AdFed tomorrow
Two events this week from the Design and Advertising communities, one in Santa Fe and the other in Albuquerque. It's difficult to overestimate the importance of design these days, particularly if it's 'good' design that helps capture the meaning of your enterprise. Meanwhile, understanding how to maximize results from your presence on the web... (I wasn't going to write 'priceless' but...)
Meeting the people in the Design and Advertising communities (respectively) is always both fun and valuable.
AIGA New Mexico presents:
Ken Carbone
October 15, 2007 at 6:00pm
Inspiration is everywhere, every minute, everyday.
Highlighting excerpts from his personal journals, Ken Carbone provides a visual guide to drawing ideas from art, science, architecture, film, technology, music and life.
This presentation offers ways to ignite a designer's natural curiosity and translate it into inspired design.
Ken Carbone is co-founder and chief creative director of the Carbone Smolan Agency in New York City. Ken is among America's most respected graphic designers, whose designs are renowned for their clarity, intelligence and longevity. He and his partner, Leslie Smolan, have built an international reputation creating outstanding programs for world-class clients, including Morgan Stanley, Tiffany & Co., Herman Miller, PBS, Christie's, the W Hotel Group and the Clinton Administration.
In addition, Ken is the author of The Virtuoso: Face to Face with 40 Extraordinary Talents, published by Stewart Tabori & Chang. The book's emphasis on human achievement in all walks of life reflects his wide-ranging curiosity.
Ken's book will be available at the event for the cost of a small donation to AIGA New Mexico.

Santa Fe Film Festival Announcement
For more info, visit: http://www.santafefilmfestival.com/
Santa Fe Film Festival Announces the Homecoming
Of our newest star, actress Aviva
(Santa Fe) Coming home to her native Santa Fe with independent film FORGIVING THE FRANKLINS is one of Hollywood’s hottest young actresses, Aviva, star of SUPERBAD, the Judd Apatow-produced comedy that spent weeks as the No.1 movie at the box office.
Aviva was born in Santa Fe and raised in the “city different” by her parents Aram Farber and Laurie Farber-Condon. While she is enjoying success in Los Angeles, Aviva stays connected to her New Mexican roots, in her own words, “505 por vida!”
Her first film, DOWN IN THE VALLEY, was shot in Los Angeles with Edward Norton and Evan Rachel Wood. Next came FORGIVING THE FRANKLINS, which screened at the Sundance Film Festival, SXSW, Outfest and will now make its New Mexico premiere in Santa Fe, with writer/director Jay Floyd also in attendance.
Aviva is one the female leads in SUPERBAD, still in theaters. Her other recent acting work includes a short film made by Ridley Scott’s production company entitled WAFFLES FOR BREAKFAST. Aviva also completed filming two other projects, an indie film in Berlin called GUIDES and in New Orleans, the 80’s spoof ZEROES.
Aviva began her acting career at a young age by appearing in commercials for Burger King, Toyota and Pringles. At age 6, she landed a spot for a Downey infomercial on the importance of recycling. Aviva’s first TV movie was THE FIRE NEXT TIME directed by Tom McLoughlin, followed by THE FIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS directed by Terrance Hill. Her other television work includes OUT OF JIMMY’S HEAD for the Cartoon Network (half animation/half stop action), COLD CASE on CBS- as a killer, MALCOM IN THE MIDDLE on FOX and GENE SIMMONS FAMILY JEWELS on A&E.
A dancer as well, Aviva worked with the Charisma Dance Ensemble, Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet, Something in the Air and Moving People Dance Theatre for teachers including Audrey Derrel, Gisela Genschow, Cathy Roe, Ronn Stewart and Elise Gent. Aviva graduated from Santa Fe High School in three years and moved onto the Oakland Ballet.
Aviva co-founded WOMEN WHO ACT, a volunteer group in LA and is involved with lightsoutsf.org (encouraging energy conservation). While working on her career in Hollywood, her “dream is to be a working actress who can live back at home in New Mexico in my Earthship ... yes, Earthship - look it up if you aren't familiar, they're awesome! Then I wouldn't have to make my Mom ship me chile to LA.”
Aviva will be with Jay Floyd to present FORGIVING THE FRANKLINS, a hysterical comedy about a conservative, God fearing Southern family that is spiritually changed by an auto accident, but who they become puts them at odds with the highly conservative values surrounding them. Aviva will also be the youngest person to present an award in the history of the Milagro Awards Ceremony, which this year lands on December 1, 2007 at 4 pm at the Lensic Performing Arts Center.
For a nice photo of Aviva and information on the film, go to: www.forgivingthefranklinsthemovie.com
For interviews with Aviva, contact Stephen Rubin at press@santafefilmfestival.com

art:21-Art in the Twenty-First Century is the only series on television to focus exclusively on contemporary visual art and artists in the United States, and it uses the medium of television to provide an experience of the visual arts that goes far beyond a gallery visit. Fascinating and intimate footage allows the viewer to observe the artists at work, watch their process as they transform inspiration into art, and hear their thoughts as they grapple with the physical and visual challenges of achieving their artistic v isions. The second installment of Season 4 examines the ways in which four artists use their work to picture war, express outrage, and
empathize with the suffering of others.

Apple's Insomnia Film Festival
(btw, this is open only to high school and college filmmakers)
From the Apple Education Site:
The Insomnia Film Festival is back—and while the world sleeps, you could be making film history.
Calling all high school and college filmmakers.
On Saturday, October 13 at 9:00 a.m. (Eastern time), we’ll post a top-secret list of elements — special props, dialogue, settings — you get the idea. Choose any three to include in your movie. Then all you and your team have to do is write, cast, shoot, edit, score, and upload your 3-minute masterpiece within 24 hours. No problem, right?
Once the films are in, your friends, family, and adoring fans will be able to watch them online and rate their favorites. The 25 entries with the highest rating on November 9 at 12:00 a.m. EST will be screened by industry professionals, including Barry Sonnenfeld, James Mangold, and Nora Ephron.
If your film is the biggest hit with either the public or the pros, each member of your team will receive a MacBook Pro, Final Cut Studio 2, Logic Studio, and Shake so you can get started on that first sequel. How’s that for a Hollywood ending?
More info at the Apple Education Site
