Media Industries for New Mexico's Future (MISP Conference January 12th)

By all accounts, it's been a great year for New Mexico's Film and Media Industries, with production, income and employment all up, more locally shot work hitting the screens and students beginning to graduate from programs ushered in with the state's Media Industries Strategic Plan a few years ago.

For portion of what's going on with all that, you might be interested in the 4th Annual Media Industries Conference: "Media Industries 4 New Mexico's Future" (also known as the "MISP" Conference, for New Mexico's Media Industries Strategic Plan). It'll run Saturday this time, January 12th at UNM's Student Union Building from 9am - 5pm.

We've got an exciting line-up with Maggie Macnab on Design, Making NM's Incentives Work, Indie Filmmaking Essentials, Animation, Game Development and Education sessions (and more). The event is free, but registration is required (Click here to Register). More info at the ARTS Lab site as well.

ABQ Game Developers Meet-up December 13th

GAME DEVELOPERS UNITE --- & GIVE BACK!
ALBUQUERQUE IGDA HOLIDAY MEET-UP 12/13

For Immediate Release
Contact: Eric Renz-Whitmore, ewhitmore@gmail.com

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Albuquerque's Rio Grande Chapter of the
International Game Developers Association (IGDA) will have its second
chapter meeting Thursday, December 13th at Sauce|Raw Nightclub
downtown, featuring speed presentations on projects and activities
from the local game community, and a chance to give back through the
"Child's Play Charity" which benefits UNM Children's Hospital.

Jonathan Whetzel, one of the Chapter Organizers, is adding another feature this time

who created the Penny Arcade comics, collects new video games and toys
for children's hospitals around the world."

From their website (http://www.childsplaycharity.org):

"Since 2003, over 100,000 gamers worldwide have banded together
through Child's Play, a community based charity grown and nurtured
from the game culture and industry. Over two million dollars in
donations of toys, games, books and cash for sick kids in children¹s
hospitals across North America and the world have been collected since
our inception.
... When gamers give back, it makes a difference!"

Since UNM Children's Hospital is one of the partnering hospitals that
can use your help, Albuquerque IGDA will collect donations at the
event.

HVS was originally performed as a play at the late Gorilla Tango Comedy Theatre in April 2006, and was subsequently determined one of New Mexico's TOP TEN ARTISTIC & CULTURAL EVENTS OF 2006 by the Weekly Alibi.

ABOUT THE MOVIE:
Written by Jason Witter and Aaron Frale, and directed by Jason Witter, HVS is a combination of Shakespeare's Hamlet, and the hit TV series, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. Hamlet (Kevin R. Elder) is haunted by the possibility that his Latin Lover Uncle Claudio (Doug Montoya) is a vampire who murdered Hamlet's father (Elias Lee Francis IV) in order to become king and seduce Hamlet's mother, Gertrude (Summer Olsson). As the obvious truth slaps Hamlet in the face, he must suppress his desires to become a male cheerleader, and face the fact that he is the chosen one who must face the demons of darkness. Along the way, he is aided by his faithful friend Horatio (George Bach), The Playa King (Rusty Rutherford), and two of Europe's finest vampire slayers, Othello (Andy Brooks) and MacBeth (Nick Lopez). Hamlet's path is obstacled by his frat-buddies-turned-bloodsuckers, Rosenchad (Daniel T. Cornish) and Guildenbrad (Scott Bryan), and his insane, obsessed girlfriend, Ophelia (Leslie Nesbit), and her bad ass cheerleading brother, Laertes (Chet Stillwood). In the end, it all comes down to a battle of vampires and wits, as Hamlet and Laertes dual it out in a no-holds-barred, male cheerleading dance off that can only end in one thing - DEATH!!!

Nano-Tech Forum in Albuquerque

Next week, the Forbes | Wolfe Nanotech Forum in Albuquerque (December 10 and 11 at the Embassy Suites) will have an impressive line-up of speakers from the nanotech research and business worlds, highlighting the opportunities presented by groups such as CINT, the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies, right here in New Mexico.

Markets & Molecules: Inventing the Future. Investing in Nanotech.

Nanotechnology — controlling matter at the molecular level — is sparking a wave of innovation in everything from everyday clothing to cutting edge materials like "invisibility cloaks."

Battery-powered fabrics that will enable soldiers to plug electronic devices into their uniforms, medical treatments that target cancerous cells with minimal side effects and materials lighter than steel that possess ten times as much strength are no longer just hype; nor are they breakthroughs that will take decades to materialize. As the pace of invention quickens, technological discoveries are accelerating change and creating opportunity for nimble startups and wreaking havoc on incapacitated incumbents.

Breakthroughs that were once science fiction are now science fact. Inventions such as stain-proof clothing, solar cells printed on plastic, and memory chips thousands of times smaller, cheaper and more powerful have electrified the investment world and are set to disrupt old blue-chip companies. Once "stealth" companies such as A123 Systems, Nanosys and Cambrios are readying to step into the spotlight and high-flying venture capitalists are placing their multi-million dollar bets. As global spending on nanotech R&D continues to grow, exceeding an estimated $12 billion in 2006, who is reaping the rewards and how can you — whether an institutional or individual investor, company executive or board member — position yourself accordingly?

At this groundbreaking inaugural forum, you will:

  • Learn from and challenge hand picked world-leaders dissecting every facet of the nanotech field
  • Hear from the world's most elite scientists who will share their ideas on what it takes to invent and invest in the future
  • Discover how to take advantage of the sizeable opportunities in this growing industry
  • Gain exclusive access to cutting-edge nanotechnology labs
  • Pick the brains of the entrepreneurs risking it all in tandem with the venture capitalists, private equity, and hedge fund financiers

  • More information at the Forbes | Wolfe Nanotech Forum site.

This Week @ UNM / ARTS Lab

Three events in the ARTS Lab world this week at UNM.

    GAME ON
First, all day Thursday, students will have their new games on display for the CS/ECE 433 Video Game Competition.  The public can try its hand at the games in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Building atrium from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with judges reviewing the games from 5:30 - 7:00 PM. Several Awards will be given for best games, people's choice and most creative games.
    WHEN:  9:00 AM - 5:00 PM (Public Play); 5:30 - 7:00 PM Judges Review, Thursday 12/6
WHERE:  ECE Atrium @ UNM (Main Campus)

    WORD & IMAGE MOVIE SCREENING
Each year, UNM Cinematic Arts' "Word & Image" video production class produces several stand-out short movies, many of which have gone on to acclaim at festival showings and beyond.  This year, five production teams will show their short movies at UNM's ARTS Lab Garage (more info to come).
    WHEN:  6:30 - 8:00 PM, Thursday, 12/6
WHERE:  ARTS Lab Garage, 131 Pine St, NE (One block west of University, half a block north of Central)

    THE DRM GAME
Digital Rights Management (DRM), the control, tracking, and pay structure for distribution of digital media from music to movies, TV shows and games, is a hot-button issue for students, business people, and the creators of content alike (among other things, it's closely related to the ongoing WGA writers strike).  How do media companies enforce restrictions on download and distribution of music and movies?  Why have Apple's iTunes and the group Radiohead achieved such success?  Join us at the ARTS Lab Garage this Friday when ECE Professor Greg Heileman leads the audience through a game that simulates the DRM decision-making process to show which activities work for media companies, and which behaviors will likely lead to prosecution.
    WHEN:  2:00 - 4:00 PM, Friday 12/7
WHERE:  ARTS Lab Garage, 131 Pine St, NE (One block west of University, half a block north of Central)

Incentives Session @ Santa Fe Film Festival today...

    NEW MEXICO FILM INCENTIVES:
    CAN THE SUCCESS BE DUPLICATED?

Film production has not only doubled, but tripled and even quadrupled since Gov. Bill Richardson, with the blessings of the New Mexico Legislature, enacted sweeping tax rebates and incentives to lure Hollywood to the state. Now, inquiring minds want to know: Can those same incentives be expanded to support the growth of a more sustainable and permanent multimedia cluster grounded in New Mexico, from soundstages and post-production houses to game designers and digital developers? Will the Legislature buy into sweetening the pot, or will the film industry have to prove itself before more gains can be made?
Moderator: Alton Walpole, president of Mountainair Films, Santa Fe's largest, full-service film production company
