ALONG THE PECOS @ The MOV-iN Gallery

The MOV-iN Gallery at the College of Santa Fe invites you to attend...

ALONG THE PECOS

A Collaborative Installation with surround-sound environment by Steven M. Miller and large-format black and white photographs by Jennifer Schlesinger.

OPENING RECEPTION on Friday, February 1st, 4:45-7:00pm

Along its course, the Pecos River links a multitude of geographies, joining a diversity of uses and abuses, personal and cultural relationships to it waters, and histories, myths, and possible futures.
The river traverses public and private lands, designated wilderness and urban space, agriculture and industry, as it winds its way through Eastern New Mexico and ultimately across West Texas to the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo. Mapping aural, visual, social, and physical geographies of the Pecos River through abstract representations of time and place, Along the Pecos offers an immersive multivalent experience of sonic and visual interpretations of the river and its surroundings. In bridging the aural and visual, documentation and abstract representation, site-specificity and portable installation, Along the Pecos is intended to refocus and recontextualize issues of ecology and relationship to place along the complex polymorphous river environment.

The MOV-iN Gallery is located at 1600 St. Michael's Drive on the College of Santa Fe campus (room adjacent to THE SCREEN). The MOV-iN Gallery is directed by David Stout and staffed by students from both Moving Image Arts and Visual Arts departments at CSF. The MOV-iN gallery is dedicated to transdisciplinary art  and technology works including animation, video art, sound art, web
art, robotics, networked performance, interactive sculpture, simulation environments, and other emergent forms.

RioFest International Environmental Film Festival this Weekend in Socorro

From the NM Business Weekly:

Socorro hosts environmental film festival

The second RioFest International Environmental Film Festival kicks off this weekend in Socorro.

The event features 17 independent films, panels, a benefit luncheon and a discussion with performance artist, explorer and octogenarian activist Katie Lee. Lee battled the flooding of Glen Canyon in the 1960s and is only the third woman to run all of the Grand Canyon's river rapids.

The events all take place at the Macey Center at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. The festival takes place Jan. 25-26.

Among the films are "Gimme Green," about America's obsession with lawns, and "French Fries to Go" about Telluride, Colo.'s biodiesel project.

There will be panels on Rio Grande water issues and discussions with filmmakers. A GreenFeast on Saturday will raise funds for an ecologically friendly bus shelter at Socorro's public charter school.

Revolutions International Theatre Festival, now with stops in Santa Fe

Hey everyone... I feel a little sorry that I haven't posted much about theater here of late, but Tricklock Theatre Company's Revolutions International Theater Festival has been drawing great crowds here in Albuquerque, and will be making a few more stops this year in Santa Fe.

Tricklock is one of the groups really making the case for how our local arts scene can help build our film business, with the talents of Kate Schroeder behind and in front of the camera (soon to be seen in Swing Vote), and Chad Brummett (3:10 to Yuma, Spirit), and Tricklock's overall mission includes bringing groups from around the world to NM and vice versa.

Here are a couple of the Santa Fe shows (I saw Elephants last night -- very fun and inventive), but there more info available about all the shows, ticketss, etc., at:  http://www.tricklock.com

TITLE:
SIGGRAPH @ UNM
Computational Cameras: Convergence of Optics and Software
by Shree Nayar, Columbia University

ABSTRACT:
This week, we are proud to present the first of our SIGGRAPH @ UNM series,
where we bring actual SIGGRAPH presentations to the UNM community.  This
week, we present Shree Nayar's talk from the popular SIGGRAPH course on
computational photography.

Computational cameras use unconventional optics and software to produce
new forms of visual information, including wide field-of-view images,
high dynamic range images, multispectral images, and depth images.  Using
a controllable optical system to form the image and a programmable light
source as the camera's flash can further enhance the capabilities of
these cameras.

BIO:
Shree K. Nayar is the T. C. Chang Chaired Professor in the Department
of Computer Science at Columbia University. He received his PhD
degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Robotics
Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. At Columbia, he is co-director
of the Columbia Vision and Graphics Center and heads the Computer Vision
Laboratory (CAVE), which is dedicated to the development of advanced
computer vision systems. His research is focused on three broad areas,
namely, the creation of novel vision sensors, the design of physics based
models for vision, and the development of algorithms for scene
interpretation. The work conducted by his research team is motivated by
applications in the fields of digital imaging, computer graphics,
human-machine interfaces and robotics.

Business and Community Development Calendar Launched

Many of the groups within New Mexico's broader film and media community have their own calendars for their events and others of interest (we try to post the media related events over at http://nm-media.blogspot.com/ but that's a little Albuquerque-centric and hit and miss).

Now NM EDD and a handful of good organizations committed to Economic Development have put together a really good functional site for activities statewide.  In and of itself, that's good, but it includes a special section for Film, Media and Art events -- that's already well populated.  Please check it out.  The site is here (http://edc alendar.nmccap.org/), but if you have a chance you might also look through the revamped site for NMEDD and its community partners.
___

The New Mexico Economic Development Department (NMEDD) recently announced the public launch of the New Mexico Business and Community Development Calendar ( http://edc alendar.nmccap.org/), an interactive online calendar of economic and community development events. The calendar is geared toward business owners, academics and economic and development professionals and will serve as a single reference source for business, educational and training activities across the state.

A strategic initiative of NMEDD, the New Mexico Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Network and the New Mexico Finance Authority (NMFA), the calendar was developed and is hosted by New Mexico Community Capital (NMCC). Businesses, associations and other organizations may set up free accounts for posting their events. Everyone, from employees to consultants to community leaders, can browse these events by industry, region and date, and can be directed to links for sign-up information.

"New Mexico's economic development professionals in the public, private and nonprofit sectors will benefit enormously from a single clearinghouse of economic and community development-related events - from seminars and conferences, to town hall meetings and formalized trainings," said NMEDD Cabinet Secretary Designate Fred Mondragon. "The New Mexico Business Calendar is the first tool anyone interested in growing New Mexico's economy should reach for."

"The New Mexico Business Calendar provides a much-needed, content-rich way to access statewide information in an easily accessible format," said William Sisneros, CEO of NMFA. "Anyone can create an account and add events and job postings, subscribe to RSS feeds, or just browse at their leisure. It is a great one-stop business resource."

YPulse College Mashup (in Santa Monica)

One of the threads during the recent NM Media Industries Summit & Conference was the need to incorporate the technology being used by students in public and higher ed schools. If you're in the Santa Monica area at the end of this month and want to be immersed in the latest tools, you might check out the Ypulse College Mashup...

Take A 'Roadtrip' To The Ypulse College Mashup

Posted by anastasia

Roadtrip NationWe're heading into the final days before the latest Ypulse conference happening January 31-February 1 in Santa Monica, CA. I'm incredibly excited about our program -- if you're trying to reach college students, you should not miss this event. Other conferences may have "college tracks," but none promise this type of day-long immersion with some of the most knowledgeable people in this field. You can register online here. And on that note, we have added a final speaker, Mike Marriner, one of the founders of "Roadtrip Nation," the series following young people who hit the road after graduation in an attempt to learn from inspirational leaders who forged their own paths. More about Mike:

Post-graduation, feeling sheltered and underexposed to the world around him, Mike hit the road (with friends Brian McAllister and Nathan Gebhard) in an unsound 1985 Green RV to interview people who defined their own roads in life including the founder of Starbucks, Lobstermen, artists, the founder of Barnes and Noble, CEO of National Geographic Ventures, the scientist who decoded the human genome, CEO of Dell Computers, truck drivers, filmmakers, social activists, and many others. Contrary to what they had learned in school or from growing up in California, they learned that people can build lives in line with their passions and individuality.

That trip inspired them to create Roadtrip Nation, a grassroots organization that mobilizes students to hit the road, interview leaders from all walks of life, and explore the world for themselves. Footage from these trips are shared with individuals everywhere through the Roadtrip Nation Series on PBS, books, various broadcast partnerships, and online at www.roadtripnation.com.

Also, due to financial constraints on our end, our friends at Gorilla Soapbox will not be recording this event for us. So if you aren't there in person, you won't find it online. They will be posting video from the Tween Mashup soon...

The Ypulse College Mashup would not be happening without our sponsors -- a big thanks to our founding sponsor, Mr. Youth, our sponsor CollegeWeekLive, our research sponsor SurveyU and our exhibitors CafeScribe, Imagine Marketing Agency and our newest exhibitor, Nokia NSeries. Thanks also to our friends at Cynopsis, Youth Market Alerts, EMF, and New Music Tip Sheet for helping to get the word out.

CVF Jan 17: Tech Transfer Best Practices

Hey everyone...

One of the really good things during this past weekend's summit and conference was the participation of many people doing very interesting work at places like Los Alamos and Sandia National Labs, WSMR, AFRL and the like.  While the traditional rap on the labs has often been that their technology is a long way from commercialization, many of the projects discussed this past weekend, and other local tech transfer stories suggest very real opportunities -- especially for those of us in the same neighborhood.

CVF January is in Bernalillo

TITLE:
Advanced Digital Hair/Fur Pipeline at Sony Pictures Imageworks
by Armin Bruderlin, Sony Imageworks

ABSTRACT:
A practical animal fur and human hair pipeline for digital characters has been in development at Sony Pictures Imageworks since its initial implementation in 1998. To date, our hair/fur pipeline has been successfully utilized in 14 motion pictures, both live-action and computer animated. The system has proven capable of producing a wide range of looks requested by our clients, from short animal fur to long human hair, and, most challengingly, the accurate reproduction of the hair of real actors.

In this talk, I will introduce the core building blocks that make up the pipeline. Some of the more recent features are presented in more detail.

BIO:
Armin Bruderlin is currently a senior software engineer and the 3D-tools lead at Sony Pictures Imageworks in Culver City, California. Since joining in 1997, he has been working in the software department while supporting the production of movies such as "Surf's Up", "Open Season", the "Spiderman" movies, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe", "The Polar Express", "The Chubb Chubbs", and "Stuart Little".

Armin received a B.Sc. in Informatik from the Fachhochschule Furtwagen in Germany, and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science
from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. Armin's interests in computer graphics include all aspects of making
believable computer animated characters.

Media Industries Summit & Conference this past weekend

Hi everyone...

We'd like to thank all those of you who participated in this past weekend's NM Media Industries Summit and Conference.  We had over 300 people participating in our combined events -- and with over 250 at the Legislative Finance Committee Hearing, that's a great showing for our community.

We'll be posting information and updates shortly at the Summit & Conference sites, and making documents available at the MISP altmedianm site as well.

Before that, I'd like to apologize for a scheduling screw-up I made for the session on the WGA Writers Strike.  I somehow gave the wrong times for the session to two of New Mexico's most prominent voices for the Writers Guild of America here in New Mexico.  While I think attendees got a good feel for the issues involved from Terry Borst, Carolyn Miller and moderator Gene Grant, Kirk Ellis and Matt McDuffie were both very eager to express their views for our attendees.  I regret that my mistake kept them from doing so.

Best wishes,

Eric

We may have forgotten to mention this, but... the 4th Annual NM Media Industries Conference is tomorrow (Saturday, January 12th).

For more information and the link to register, please visit the conference site at: http://artslab.unm.edu/newsevents/MI4NMF.htm

I hate to single out any one session (if you'd like to get more info out about yours, please send it), but there are a few updates to mention (all are at the site).

First, for our Digital Media 101 Session (9:35 - 10:30 AM | Ballroom A), Sony Pictures Imageworks' Sande Scoredos will be talking about "Considering an Exciting Career in Visual Effects and Animation" including where Imageworks sits in the world of high end visual media, and how you, your students and friends can get involved.

At the same time, the NM Film Office Deputy Director Jennifer Schwalenberg and producer Eileen Street will be talking about the state's rebate program and making it work for you. Rebates are a big deal, and New Mexico has the best program going -- it's relatively easy to use, and they can tell you how.

As I hope you've heard, a proposal for capping those rebates will be heard during the Saturday afternoon Legislative Finance Committee session in Santa Fe. For more information on that session, voicing opinions, etc., please visit: http://groups.google.com/group/nm-media-industries/browse_thread/thread/8e6a95d82f2f8cfc

From 10:35 - 11:30, the good folks at the Art Center Design College will take us through "Animation 101: Intro to 2D Character Animation and 3D Animation" in Ballroom A. They've got a great team together, and will include practical demonstrations of the tools necessary to make great things happen (their bios are kinda funny, too).

Following that, we have "Understanding and Using Symbols in Visual Communication"
with Maggie Macnab in Ballroom B. Understanding the power of design and using symbols effectively are two qualities that separate the excellent from the merely okay, the Apple from the... company you've never heard of. Please join us for this special session.

For the afternoon... we have an update on the Trends in Web and Software Development session: it now includes Adobe Expert Elaine Montoya, Agile New Mexico's Frank LaFond, Apple's Bill Hanson, and Duke City Fix creator Chantal Foster, moderated by ARTS Lab's (and the College of Fine Arts) own William F. Collins.

There are lots of great sessions across the board -- please check them out at: http://artslab.unm.edu/newsevents/MI4NMF.htm

The BBER Economic Outlook Conference is always an interesting -- and valuable -- event, especially if you have an interest in the conditions and trends affecting New Mexico's business climate.  It's also a nice prelude to...

MEMBERS OF NEW MEXICO'S media-related worlds - including film, animation, games, education, research and technology development - will
converge at the Fourth Annual N.M. Media Industries Conference: Media 4 New Mexico's Future, hosted by the University of New Mexico ARTS Lab on Saturday, Jan. 12, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the UNM Student Union Building. The event is free, but registration is required. More information, including a complete schedule, is available at: http://artslab.unm.edu .

There's a lot going on Saturday, including a session with local Writers Guild of America members discussing the Writer's Strike, sessions on Animation basics and getting involved in New Mexico's animation community, using New Mexico's world-renowned media production rebate program, Symbology and Design with Maggie Macnab, highlights of new software from NM Adobe Users Group's Elaine Montoya and Apple's Bill Hanson... and much much more.

Please join us!
