White Sands International Film Festival... and Swashbuckling Seminar

Certainly seems like March will be bringing us lots of conferences,
festivals and events.

March 27th through 29th is the NM Film Office's "NM Filmmakers
Conference and First Vision Forum" with a great line-up of speakers
and talks (and more announcements to come). More info at
http://www.nmfilm.com

And now the White Sands International Film Festival seems to be
expanding as well with executive producer Donn Finn (owner of Mali
Finn, who cast Titanic, LA Confidential and a few other films here and
there). And apparently there's a little bit of swashbuckling as well.

Greetings to all: Film Industry Professionals & Acting Troupes
.......Please pass along this information---

2008 White Sands International Film Festival Update: (The
little film festival that could)
Remember that little film festival you heard about down in Southern
New Mexico.....you know, the one out at White Sands in Alamogordo?
Well it is time to think about a getaway down south for a few
days---------to attend and participate in its 4th Annual festival
production, panels and workshops!
Film festival website is: ( www.wsiff.com). Go check out the
competitive films. The quality of the films received this year are
amazing! WSIFF has chosen some that are sure to become award-winning
favorites in the finalists! And this year promises to be bigger and
better than ever! Out of 140 competitive films there are 50 to be
screened at an all-new digital state-of-the-art Cinema. The Festival
has some outstanding venue partnerships, in addition to guest
filmmakers and the special features. 2008 WSIFF has grown and
expanded once again to now provide 7 Festival days, with special
seminars, workshops and feature films! We have added the All-New
recently constructed "Aviator 10" Allen Theaters Cinema on Hwy 70
bypass as the new screening facility. Aviator is providing 4 theaters
dedicated to the festival screenings, and a special upstairs lounge
for filmmakers! The New Mexico Museum of Space History is hosting
both a special feature night and the all-day High School Competition
complete with workshops. On March 16th, the Spencer Theater in Alto,
(Ruidoso) NM, is hosting a very special opening day activity schedule
with an elegant VIP Reception that will delight you while the scenery
of Sierra Blanca and the Sacramento Mountains takes your breath away
and has you contemplating making a feature film in the main lobby!
Festival passes and seminars still available. For more information,
call Kierstin 1-877-345-6973.

(more info below)

2. When DomeFest 2008 hits the road, it will be the best opportunity
yet for animators and visual artists creating 'fulldome content' to
have their work seen by more people than ever before. Not sure what
fulldome content is? Come visit the ARTS Lab Garage (131 Pine Street
NE @ the Wooden Steps) from 2-4PM when we'll discuss creating artistic
content for planetariums, and help find ways to get more New Mexicans
into the show. More info at: http://artslab.unm.edu

TITLE: SIGGRAPH @ UNM
Advanced real-time rendering at Valve
by Chris Green and Jason Mitchell, Valve

ABSTRACT:
We celebrate the leap year by bringing you three talks by Valve, first
presented at SIGGRAPH 2007. First, Chris Green will talk about using
surface detail maps to create soft self-shadowing effects, which are
important to give games the photorealism more often seen in feature
film. Next, he will talk about a problem we have also been working on
here at UNM, that of magnifying vector textures for first-person shooters
using fast shading algorithms. Finally, Jason Mitchell discusses
cartoon shading for real-time illustrative effects in the new game
release Team Fortress 2.

Local "Jumpers" Writer in the News

Some of you know that one of our local Sci-Fi writers is enjoying a little extra publicity because of the new film Jumpers on screens nationwide (w/ Hayden Christensen and Samuel L. Jackson -- it's really pretty fun).  New Mexico's wealth in writers of sci-fi and speculative fiction is really pretty cool -- especially when it intersects with our digital media world.

If you'd like more information, Steven Gould will be at the Wyoming Library (8205 Apache NE, 291-6264) on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. to give a free presentation titled " Jumper : From Book to Movie" full of unprintable Hollywood tidbits.  Also, there's a neat interview with him in the current Weekly Alibi (excerpted below):

Big-Screen Jumper

An interview with author Steven Gould

Sci-fi author Steven Gould
Steven Gould sat typing on his white, Linux laptop—just another customer at Satellite Coffee in Nob Hill enjoying a leisurely Friday morning. His fingers flashed over the keys, preparing a post for his blog, An Unconvincing Narrative. The topic: A review published on Salon.com analyzing the political undertones within the multimillion-dollar film based on Gould's novel, Jumper. "Now I've arrived," the Albuquerque-native jokes, closing the laptop before giving the Alibi a moment of his time. His T-shirt, perhaps, best encompasses the tone of the interview to follow. "Don't judge a book by its movie," it reads. And that's exactly what Gould is banking on.

How long ago were the rights to Jumper purchased by New Regency? The book was published way back in '92, but it was optioned multiple times over the years. This one—the one that mattered—was a very decent option in the summer of 2003. ... They went right up to the wire to exercise it.

What does that mean? When you option a book, you're paying a small amount of money that doesn't say I'm going to make the movie, but for the period of the option you're not going to sell it to anybody else—I have an exclusive option. If they exercise the option, they actually purchase the rights. ... Then they start hiring actors and firing actors.

How much say did you have during the pre-production process?None. None, whatsoever. Other than to say you can make a movie based on my book. But it's their movie. I don't have any record of making successful, multimillion-dollar movies—Doug Liman does.

Did you have a say in whether you liked the script?Oh, no. They gave me the script because [I was writing] Griffin's Story, essentially the backstory of the Jamie Bell character who's in the movie, so I would know what was going on. But, no, they were not going to give me any say.

Going back to when you originally wrote the book, and your multiple other books, did you ever start writing with the idea of translating them into movies?Absolutely not. Jumper is a first-person, very interior novel. An emotional novel, a novel about internal change. Teleportation is a metaphor for escape in the book—dealing with some moderately heavy issues. Dealing with an alcoholic parent, dealing with parents who've abandoned you when you're 5. I hadn't thought of it as a movie at all, but it was optioned several times over the years so it must have struck some chord.

Does making a sequel to Jumper depend on how well the movie does?Right. From what I heard at the premiere, if it does $50 million domestically over the opening weekend and $100 million worldwide, there is a good chance of sequels. Then I've got a mass-movie publicity machine, which is only interested in pushing their movies, but every time they push those movies, it's good for me. No book gets this sort of publicity.

Santa Fe City Council Candidates Forum this Thursday

From the Santa Fe Alliance (and others) working to encourage Santa Fe's continued creative development...

==================================
Santa Fe City Council Candidates Forum

Santa Fe Alliance, Creative Santa Fe, and the Green Business Network are pleased to announce that we will co-sponsor a forum for Santa Fe City Council candidates in the Santa Fe Community College Jemez Room on Thursday, February 21 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Gershon Siegel, Editor of The Sun Monthly, and former Alliance board member, will co-facilitate the forum with Walter Drew. Mr. Drew, a former member of the Santa Fe Historic Design Review Board and resident of Santa Fe for the past 40 years, is a mediator in construction disputes.

The co-sponsors have also encouraged social studies/government teachers in middle and high schools and instructors at SFCC to consider
structuring a project for their students centered on this forum, and to mispbring students to the forum.

The candidates have received the following questions for the forum:

1. Please give an example of how you would move Santa Fe into a green
economy.

2. If Santa Fe is truly to be a center for arts and creative
enterprise, it must be able to provide young, emerging talent with
affordable live/work space, access to local markets, and opportunities
to develop careers.  By what means can our city do this and what should
be the role of city government in the process to help young emerging
artistic talent?

3. According to the 2004 UNM BBER study on the Arts and Culture
Industry in Santa Fe, what percentage of the workforce is employed in
these sectors? How do you see the City's role in sustaining and growing
these industries?

4. What percentage of a dollar spent in a locally owned independent
business is recycled into our local economy versus dollars spent at a
chain or big box store? What is the City's role in supporting its
locally owned independent businesses?

5. Outline your vision for the implementation of the City's Angelou
Economic Development plan.

6. What is your recipe for a sustainable neighborhood in Santa Fe? What
tools would you put in place to support sustainable neighborhoods?

aspects of sustainability in our community, and to create an open

business response to The Angelou Plan's and Santa Fe City's economic
development recommendations to make Santa Fe the "clean energy and
water conservation capital of the USA".

Its membership is comprised of businesses, organizations, educators,

Mr. Pesci's credits include "Raging Bull," "Goodfellas," for which he won an Academy Award in 1990 for Best-Supporting Actor, "Casino," "Home Alone," the 1993 classic comedy "My Cousin Vinny" and three turns as the sleazy but likeable Leo Getz in the action series "Lethal Weapon."

Their lives are irrevocably altered when a world famous heavy weight boxer from South America comes to train at the Ranch.

Re: [MISP] Digital Arts Conference

A couple real favorites are on tap at the annual Digital Arts Conference -- coming up soon.

We've received really good feedback on Maggie Macnab's presentation at the recent Media Industries Conference, and I'm glad to see her, Bart Cleveland and Laura Gutman on the list of presenters this year (btw, Maggie's new book is now available here: http://www.amazon.com/Decoding-Design-Understanding-Symbols-Communication/dp/1581809697/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1203097348&sr=8-1)

We've had the pleasure of working directly with Brad Stoddard and Mary Tsiongas -- and Jason Hariton's perspective is also well-worth checking out.

Best wishes,

Eric

TITLE:
Virtual Environments: a multi-disciplinary research tool
by Betty Mohler, Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics

ABSTRACT:
Virtual environments (VEs) are computer-simulations of real or fictional
environments with which users can interact. Potential applications of VEs
include training, visualization, entertainment, design, rehabilitation,
education, and research. The ultimate goal of VEs is to provide the full
sensory experience of being in a simulated world. VEs are a very powerful
tool to answer scientific research questions from many disciplines. In
this talk, four specific projects will be described which use virtual
environments to investigate human behavior and also provide suggestions
to improve upon the current technology used for VEs.

First, an empirical study of space perception within immersive VEs will
be presented. Second, results which demonstrate the visual influence on
human locomotor behavior will be discussed. Third, a project that analyzes
the illusion of self-motion within a large-screen projection VE will be
presented. Finally, the implementation of fully articulated full-body
avatars within a VE in real time will be described. My research
vision is to use virtual environments as a multi-disciplinary tool to
provide scientists from various research backgrounds with a rich
collection of data on human behavior and interaction. My goal as a
scientist has always been to simultaneously investigate human perception
while gaining insight from the user in order to improve virtual
environments hardware and applications.

BIO:
Betty Mohler received her PhD in computer science from the University of
Utah in 2007. She is now in her second year of a post-doctoral research
position at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in
Tübingen, Germany.  Her main research interest is in understanding the
human observer towards the aim of improving virtual environment
applications. Her approach has always been a multi-disciplinary one and,
therefore, she currently collaborates with engineers, neuroscientists
and psychologists.

March 8 Songwriting Workshop in Taos: Writing Music for Hit Songs

From Michael Shorr @ Chocolate Strawberry Studios up in Taos...

*Hit Songwriting Teacher coming to Taos, March 8, 2008*

Jai Josefs is the author of Writing Music for Hit Songs, the definitive
text on modern music writing, endorsed by hit writers including Diane
Warren (with songs on nearly 200 million in album sales to her credit)
and the Berklee College of Music in Boston. He is also a nationally
renowned songwriting coach, several of whose students have been signed
to major label deals. In addition, he is a successful
songwriter/producer in his own right whose credits include more than 30
songs recorded with such companies as MCA, RCA, Motown, and Disney. His
songs have been used in TV shows on every major network (CSI, Brothers
and Sisters, What About Brian, Monk, Cold Case etc.) as well as over a
dozen major motion pictures with stars like Nick Nolte, Harrison Ford,
Jessica Lange, and Billy Bob Thornton.

He will be in Taos to give a one day music writing workshop Saturday
March 8th, 2008. He'll be talking about the dramatic changes happening
in today's Music Biz and how YOU can stay on top of them. He'll be
teaching you simple techniques you can start using right away to help
your music be the best it can be and get noticed. He'll also spend the
last couple of hours hearing you play your music, LIVE, and will offer
instant pointers and feedback; and if something knocks his socks off,
he'll take your CD away with him. This is a RARE opportunity for any
musician in New Mexico to meet, spend time with and learn from (and
perform for) someone who's on the inside on a daily basis. It's an all
day workshop. Special discount rates on hotel rooms (bring a friend,
split the costs!) available for those coming in from out of town.

Cost: $50.

Seating is limited, so reserve now for the best price and the best
seats. (Deposits are non-refundable)

For more information: www.jaijomusic.com
To reserve a space contact Ted Fox at: tedsingingfox@hotmail.com
(You MUST mention "Jai Josefs" in the subject of your email or it will
get deleted as spam).

Check-in time begins at 10 a.m. on March 8th and Jai will begin promptly
at 10:30. Location TBA.

For any of you coming from outside Taos, I've got a block of rooms set
aside at the Quality Inn on the south end of town at a GREAT discount
($59 per night, as opposed to $99). If you'd like a room, simply give
them a call at 1-800-845-0648, mention the Jai Josefs music workshop,
and they'll take care of you. And IF you feel like sticking around for
an extra day of skiing (either before or after), you'll be able to pay
that same rate.

After his father's death, Cufe (Cree actor Cody Lightning) finds himself grieving and in search of more than he has found at home.  Leaving the reservation, he heads to Tulsa, where his sister Miri (Saulteaux actress Tamara Podemski) is drinking heavily and looking for love in all the wrong places.  Cufe, far from home and eyes opened wide, is also taking his first steps toward finding love.

Harjo is a former Annenberg Film Fellows at the Sundance Institute, a United States Artist Fellowship recipient, and a winner of the Tribeca All Access Creative Promise Award.

Fwd: Register for town hall on rural-urban development

These are the same days as this year's NM Filmmakers / First Visions Conference, but the importance and potential benefit of media production that's truly statewide shouldn't be overestimated.  While much of the production business coming in from outside the state has been concentrated in our more urban areas, the possibility for doing animation, game, VFX and other production work in smaller towns throughout New Mexico has always been a facet of the state's Media Industries Strategy.

If those issues are important to you -- or you can't attend the Filmmakers Conference -- please consider the NM First Town Hall on Rural-Urban Economic Development.

NM First Banner Logo
Logo-Rural Town Hall
Registration Opens for Statewide Town Hall

Throughout the state, New Mexicans are talking about the importance of sustaining our rural communities. Many also point to the importance of strengthening the economic relationships between rural and urban communities.

For these reasons, New Mexico First is convening our 2008 town hall on rural economic development and rural-urban partnerships.

WHEN: March 27-29, 2008
WHERE: Inn of the Mountain Gods, Ruidoso, NM

Whether you live in a small or large community, this issue affects you. If you care about any of the following issues, you should sign up for the town hall:
  • Infrastructure
  • Jobs
  • Investments in energy
  • Agricultural preservation
  • Community building
  • Environmental sustainability

Who Should Attend?

  • Citizens concerned about rural communities
  • Local business people
  • Educators
  • Public officials
  • People working in economic development
  • Students

Seating is limited. The town hall process can only accommodate about 120 participants. Early registration is recommended. Click here to learn more or sign up!

New Mexico First is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization co-founded in 1986 by Senators Pete Domenici and Jeff Bingaman. We bring people together to address major issues facing the state. Each town hall results in concrete recommendations for state and local leaders.
