Santa Fe City Council Candidates Forum
Santa Fe Alliance, Creative Santa Fe, and the Green Business Network are
pleased to announce that we will co-sponsor a forum for Santa Fe City Council candidates in the Santa Fe Community College Jemez Room on Thursday, February 21 from 6:00 to 8:00pm. Gershon Siegel, Editor of The Sun Monthly, and former Alliance board member, will co-facilitate the forum with Walter Drew. Mr. Drew, a former member of the Santa Fe Historic Design Review Board and resident of Santa Fe for the past 40 years, is a mediator in construction disputes.
The co-sponsors have also encouraged social studies/government teachers in middle and high schools and instructors at SFCC to consider
structuring a project for their students centered on this forum, and to mispbring students to the forum.
The candidates have received the following questions for the forum:
1. Please give an example of how you would move Santa Fe into a green
economy.
2. If Santa Fe is truly to be a center for arts and creative
enterprise, it must be able to provide young, emerging talent with
affordable live/work space, access to local markets, and opportunities
to develop careers. By what means can our city do this and what should
be the role of city government in the process to help young emerging
artistic talent?
3. According to the 2004 UNM BBER study on the Arts and Culture
Industry in Santa Fe, what percentage of the workforce is employed in
these sectors? How do you see the City's role in sustaining and growing
these industries?
4. What percentage of a dollar spent in a locally owned independent
business is recycled into our local economy versus dollars spent at a
chain or big box store? What is the City's role in supporting its
locally owned independent businesses?
5. Outline your vision for the implementation of the City's Angelou
Economic Development plan.
6. What is your recipe for a sustainable neighborhood in Santa Fe? What
tools would you put in place to support sustainable neighborhoods?

Santa Fe Alliance
The mission of the Santa Fe Alliance is to build a healthy local
economy which provides better work opportunities for the people of
Santa Fe and the surrounding region while preserving a strong sense of
community that nurtures individuals and families. Since its founding
in 2003, the Alliance has been building a diverse network of local
businesses, community members, and non-profit and governmental leaders to educate them about the importance of buying goods and services from our locally-owned businesses. By doing so, we help to create more and better job opportunities and successful businesses that enrich our community and create a prosperous regional economy.
We are part of a growing national movement called the American
Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA), whose main purpose is to enrich
communities by increasing dollars spent at locally-owned businesses.
Learn more about AMIBA at their website:

Santa Fe Green Business Network
Established in the fall of 2005, this group was originally started by
TC Gritt (Whole Foods) and Matthew Ellis (former Green & Sustainability
Issues Columnist for Blu 102.9 fm), two ordinary citizens who
recognized the urgent need to raise the level of awareness of ALL
aspects of sustainability in our community, and to create an open
conversation regarding green issues and as a significant community &
business response to The Angelou Plan's and Santa Fe City's economic
development recommendations to make Santa Fe the "clean energy and
water conservation capital of the USA".
Its membership is comprised of businesses, organizations, educators,
agriculturalists, and just ordinary people seeking more information
about "how to become greener in their lives". Members are primarily
from Santa Fe City and County, however there is strong regular
participation of folks from as far away as Albuquerque and Taos and
points in between - making this a growing regional meeting. This group
is in no official way affiliated with The Green political Party. Nor is
it a political action committee or 501(C)3.
