NMITSA 10/7: The ROI of Leadership

NMITSA Membership October Luncheon Features Author Michael Shenkman
"The ROI of Leadership" Subject Of Talk

[Albuquerque, NM, SEP 30, 2008] The New Mexico Information Technology anand Software Association (NMITSA), the state¹s largest advocacy group for IT &
software related business, announced today that author and mentorship
evangelist Michael Shenkman will be the featured speaker at the October
membership luncheon on Thursday October 9th, 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at the
Flying Star Café downtown on 723 Silver SW.

What are the qualities that distinguish a great company from a good one;
that lead to continued success, year after year?  Michael Shenkman, author
of "Leader Mentoring" and "The Arch and the Path: The Life of Leading
Greatly" encourages business to consider returns from the "immediate,
day-to-day, across-the-board impacts" of leadership when looking at their
bottom line:

"Every company today competes increasingly on its value proposition and the
ways it is able to differentiate from the competition and away from
commoditization. Value gets created in the development of products and
services, in the right hiring and development of talent, in strategic market
positioning to name a few of the big ones," Shenkman said.

"But the real value that feeds into all of these is what leaders bring to
the enterprise with their compelling visions, and their ability to integrate
disparate ideas and solutions into competitive advantages, and their energy
in driving cross-functional innovation," he said.

The event is free to NMITSA Members, $25.00 to other guests.

United States and the world.

New Mexico possesses unique information technology resources, and there is
an urgent need to leverage these assets for commercial success. As the
state's only regional information technology association, NMITSA is now

policies for its members.

To achieve these goals, it is imperative that the association attracts
investment from both its industry and associate members. In so using these

NYT bestselling-author: Mark Albion' on Duke City Fix!

Also this Wednesday...

NET IMPACT presents NY Times bestselling-author: Mark Albion' on Duke City Fix!
(And... a brief shout-out regarding the Duke City Fix website and community. It's Albuquerque focused, but it's been a key part of recent efforts here to bring together an active software and web development community. I believe it's the best single place for Albuquerque events of all kinds.)

Time: September 24, 2008 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm
Location: Dekker Perich Sabatini: Green architectural firm, 7601 Jefferson NE
Organized By: NET IMPACT UNM and Professional Chapters: Posted by Randy Burge

Event Description: FREE event! We are the change we seek.

International Net Impact cofounder and New York Times bestselling-author Mark Albion will speak about several of his popular balancing-business-with-life books at a special reception and conversation Wednesday after work at Dekker Perich Sabatini.

For registration and inquiries, please contact
abqnetimpact@gmail.com

One of the books to be covered as part of Mark's conversation:

True to Yourself: Leading a Values-Based Business

How do you build the kind of company you've always wanted to work in--one that serves people and the planet while being financially successful too?

What do you do when you believe that business should serve the common good, but everyday business pressures--meeting payroll, battling competition, keeping customers and investors happy--are at a fever pitch?

Leading a business when you measure success more broadly than with a single financial bottom line is no easy task.

Mark Albion's book, True to Yourself: Leading a Values-Based Business is a practical guide to doing just that.

This event will draw on Mark's writing and experience as a social entrepreneur, highlighting tools that you can use to combine profit with purpose, margin with mission, value with values.

Net Impact UNM and Albuquerque Professional chapters are part of the Net Impact network.

Net Impact is an international nonprofit organization whose mission is to make a positive impact on society by growing and strengthening a community of leaders who use business to improve the world. We offer a portfolio of programs to educate, equip, and inspire more than 10,000 members to make a tangible difference in their universities, organizations, and communities.

Santa Fe Complex this Wednesday: Scanning the Horizon and More

Two cool events this Wednesday. This week's 'Blender' at the Santa Fe Complex has an amazing lineup, including part of the team we at ARTS Lab are working with on Maya Skies. The Complex continues to do great work -- check them out...
Scanning the Horizon and More

Three-dimensions are the rage in this fall’s movie line-up. They’re also increasingly important in historical, archeological and paleontological research, as we’ve seen in three prior blenders at Santa Fe Complex. We continue our series on Stereo-Computational Photography with an in-depth look at 3D laser scanning in modern research.

Our look includes demonstration courtesy of Faro Technologies, a global leader in 3D scanning technology, and discussions on the use of 3D scanning for preservation. The blender will continue on Wednesday with follow-up work at the Fuller Lodge in Los Alamos and the ArtsLab at UNM. The blender begins at 6:00 at Santa Fe Complex, 632 Agua Fria St. (Parking via Romero Street.) A $5.00 donation is encouraged.

Ralph Chapman (formerly of the Smithsonian and the Idaho Virtualization Laboratories) will introduce the speakers and say a few words about his own use of laser scanning in paleontology and virtualization of artifacts. Wednesday night’s speakers include:

  • Paul Oberle of FARO Technologies who will demonstrate the use of their Photon 80/20 scanner including a presentation of a scan he will be taking at the Palace of the Governors earlier in the day.
  • Tom Pederson, a local GIS expert, will describe his use of laser scanning technology for historical preservation.
  • Tim Thomas (UNM/HPC) and Catherine Baudoin (Maxwell Museum) will speak briefly about their work in distributed digital archives for virtualized cultural artifacts.
  • Patrick French will discuss the creation of 3D models of objects from photographs using readily available software.

The 3D work will continue on Thursday in Los Alamos and Albuquerque. From 10:00 am to noon, the discussion will continue at Fuller Lodge with archivists and preservationists from Los Alamos Historic Preservation Societyand the LANL museum

The discussion continues with a demonstration of 3D scanning for staff at the UNM ARTS Lab in Albuquerque followed by a discussion with Kevin Cain, director of InsightDigital, the Institute for the Study and Integration of Graphical Heritage Techniques. Cain is collaborating with UNM and others on the Maya Skies project.

Trinity Site Open

The explosives of the Gadget were raised up to...Image via Wikipedia
We're lucky about a lot of things here in New Mexico, and we also have quite a few really unique spots that are recognized internationally as such (no offense to, say, the "Corn Palace").

One of them is the Trinity test site which is open in just under two weeks. Anyone heading that way?
Trinity Site Directions
Trinity Site is open to the public twice a year--on the first Saturday in April and October-- no reservations are required.

There are two ways of entering the restricted missile range:

1) Stallion Gate Entrance - Exit I-25 on mile marker 139 (San Antonio, N.M.) and head 12 miles east; or, exit Highway 54 onto Highway 380 and head west 53 miles of Carrizozo, N.M. Turn on the Stallion Gate entrance and head south five miles of Highway 380. The gate is opened from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Visitors are allowed to enter and exit unescorted anytime during these special days.

For a pdf format New Mexico State highway map follow this link to the state's map page. Trinity Site is clearly marked below U.S. Highway 380 on the large road map.

2) Alamogordo Alternative - The Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce sponsors a convoy for visitors that desire a tour. The Alamogordo caravan meeting site will be at the Tularosa High School Athletic Field Parking lot. Turn west off Hwy. 54/70 in Tularosa at Higuero St. Proceed west to La Luz Ave. Turn right on La Luz Ave. (north) to athletic field. Line up will begin at 7 a.m. Caravan departs at 8 a.m. Visitors entering this way will travel as an escorted group to and from Trinity Site. The drive is 145 miles roundtrip and there are no service station facilities on the missile range. The convoy is scheduled to leave Trinity Site at 12:30 or 1 p.m., depending on its size, for the return to Tularosa. The convoy may leave later if there is a large number of vehicles returning.

Cameras are allowed at Trinity Site but their use is strictly prohibited anywhere else on White Sands Missile Range.

There are no ceremonies or speakers.

For more information contact the missile range Public Affairs Office at (505) 678-1134/1700.

TEC Expo Event This Friday!

Tom Chavez speaks on “Technology Entrepreneurship. Making it through the Obstacle Course.”

Held at the Albuquerque Grand Hotel – Airport on Friday, September 19, 2008 from 11:30 AM – 1:30 PM.

Growing up in New Mexico, Tom Chavez was constantly reminded of the hard life his mother, Rose, had endured. She frequently told him and his four siblings about how a sewage plant was built behind her family’s house in Albuquerque. “When they would start up, there was a lot of noise,” she said. “Even the house would shake.” Tom said the message from his mother was clear: “You are from very humble circumstances. Your father and I have very high expectations of you.”

From a self-described middle-class Albuquerque family, Tom and all four siblings went on to become Harvard graduates. Tom’s next adventure was as founder and CEO of San Francisco - based Rapt, Inc., the leading provider of advertising yield management solutions. In 2008 his company was acquired by Microsoft to be offered as a key component of their Atlas Publisher Suite. Tom says “The opportunity to join forces with Microsoft and see our technology flourish inside a much larger platform was too compelling to pass up. Join us to hear this great success story at the New Mexico Technology Expo Luncheon.

Also, representatives from local technology associations New Mexico Bio, New Mexico IT & Software Association, New Mexico Optics Industry Association, New Mexico Solar Energy Association and the Renewable Energy Industry Association will give an overview of the latest greatest tech developments in the State. These groups represent the industry clusters that are a significant part of New Mexico’s economic success.

Sponsored by: Technology Ventures Corporation, NM WIRED, NM Department of Workforce Development and New Mexico Information Technology and Software Association.

Film Independent's 2009 Directors Lab

Call for Submissions: Film Independent's 2009 Directors Lab

Designed to help directors who are prepping their feature films, the Directors Lab is an intensive eight-week program running in Los Angeles each spring. The primary focus of the Lab is on learning to work with actors and the rehearsal process. Under the guidance of the lab instructor, Directors Lab Fellows select short scenes from their scripts to workshop. Additionally, Fellows go through a mini-production, learning how to break down a script into a shot list, collaborate with cinematographers, and construct a scene in the editing process. Film Independent provides the Lab participants with camera and sound packages to shoot their scenes. All scenes will be shot on digital video and critiqued by the Lab Instructor as well as the other Lab participants.

A secondary goal of the program is to help advance the careers of the Lab Fellows by introducing them to film professionals who can advise them on both the craft and business of directing. Lab Fellows have one-on-one meetings with established directors and other industry professionals who act as advisors on the participant's projects.

A maximum of ten projects are selected.
Directors Lab Fellows receive:
A one-year membership with Film Independent
A pass to the Directors Series, which runs concurrently with the Lab
A pass to the Los Angeles Film Festival (Westwood Pass)
Year-round support from Film Independent
