Las Cruces Lunar Challenge this Weekend

From the New Mexico Business Weekly:
Lunar Challenge set for Las Cruces

The 2008 Northrop Grumman Lunar Landing Challenge will take place Oct. 24-25 at the Las Cruces International Airport.

Nine teams are competing for $2 million in prize money. Participants must fly a space vehicle — simulating a takeoff and landing on the moon — and then repeat the flight in a limited amount of time.

NASA is providing the prize money as part of its Centennial Challenges Program to stimulate research and development of reusable rocket engine technology and new designs for future lunar landing vehicles.

The X-Prize Foundation manages the competition at no cost to NASA. The X-Prize receives financial support from sponsors for the event, including the Northrop Grumman Corp. (NYSE: NOC) and the state of New Mexico.

Although the competition is not open to the public, it will be Webcast live at http://space.xprize.org/webcast.

DomeFest 14 October (& Games)

A quick reminder that DomeFest 2008 has its New Mexico premiere one week from today (October 14th), but first, an even quicker reminder that our local International Game Developers Association chapter has its meeting tonight at the Art Center Design College.

As someone who's sometimes a bit jaded by all the fulldome work I've seen, I'm really enthusiastic about the range and quality of work from around the world in this year's show -- and the work David Beining and Jonathan Strawn did in pulling it togwether. The DomeFest 2008 juried show for fulldome work premiered to (more than) capacity crowds at Chicago's famed Adler Planetarium -- and has since been seen in cities around the world.

We're proud to share DomeFest with our friends at home, with the support of the City of Albuquerque and in association with Motion08 with public showings at 6:30 PM and 8:30 PM; $10 suggested donation.
