NMFO Black History Month Events, Academy Awards Benefit, Digital Arts Conference... and much more


I was worried that the Digital Arts Conference was this weekend -- but there's still a little time to sign up (it's March 7th with a special showcase from Friends of Film, Video and Arts on Friday, March 6th). NM Women in Film will present their International Women's Day Film showcase the next day -- more info on both below.

This weekend, join the NM Film Office in honoring Black History Month with
a weekend of films, lecture and music in honor of Black History Month. Please join us in celebrating the contributions of creative work by and about African Americans at these special events on the weekend of February 20th and 21st. Screenings will be open to the public with no cost for admission.

NM Women in Film, March 8th
*NMWIF & WIFTI INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY FILM SHOWCASE – MARCH 8TH :*

NMWIF will participate again this year in the annual WIFTI (Women in Film &
Television International) Short Film Showcase to celebrate International
Women's Day on March 8th. This year's event will be held in Santa Fe and
will include a slate of international films from women worldwide. This is a
benefit for NMWIF and WIFTI. Proceeds go to support the mentoring, training
and education of women in the film and television industry in the U.S. and
internationally.

*Call for Submissions – Attention NM Women Filmmakers:* NMWIF will select
one or two short films by New Mexico women, to be shown as part of the
program. The filmmaker(s) selected will be asked to speak about their film
at the March 8th event. If you have a short film, including animated films,
that you would like to submit, please send a DVD copy, along with a
synopsis, a list of the credits and contact information to: NMWIF, PO Box
33351, Santa Fe, NM 87594. Films must be produced and/or directed by a
woman who is a NM resident. All DVD's will be returned at the end of

Governor Bill Richardson Calls for Entries for the 5th Annual "New Mexico Filmmakers Showcase"

Guild Cinema, Albuquerque - May 14-17, 2009

 

SANTA FE - Governor Bill Richardson today announced a Call for Entries for the 2009 New Mexico Filmmakers Showcase.  The Showcase is a series of free public screenings designed to expose and celebrate the work of New Mexican filmmakers.

 

"Our Filmmakers Showcase is an exciting annual event that many of our home-grown filmmakers look forward to each year", said Governor Richardson.  "It provides a great platform for our local talent in New Mexico."

 

This four-day event offers local writers and directors a chance to have their short or feature length film shown publicly on the big screen at Guild Cinema Theatre – located at 3405 Central Avenue, NE in Albuquerque.  All screenings will be free to the public and there is no entry fee to submit a film.  Narrative, documentary, animated and experimental films are all welcome-e.

 

Guests will also be able to meet the filmmakers at an opening night gathering at Laru/CafĂ© Cubano, located at 3413 Central Ave NE in Albuquerque, just down the street from the Guild.  This reception will be held on Thursday, May 14th from 6:00-7:00pm, with the first films beginning shortly afterwards.

 

The Guild will accept a total of 30 hours of films on a first come, first served basis.  Deadline for entries is Friday, April 3rd.  Entry forms will be available at the Guild Cinema box office or online at www.nmfilm.com.  For further information, contact the Guild at (505) 266-2065, or Trish Lopez at the NM Film Office: (505) 476-5611.

Albuquerque, New Mexico, February 3, 2009 – The UNM Continuing Education Spring Digital Arts Conference in collaboration with Friends of Film will offer a presentation of short films by professional New Mexico filmmakers as their kick off event.  Additionally, Friends of Film will launch their filmmaker education series with "Director's Cut New Mexico – The Art of the Interview." 
 
"It is important for people from the community who aren't necessarily involved with the film industry to come out and meet those who are. . .The film business is a clean industry that can encompass the entire state, creating economic development even in small towns.  What we need is New Mexicans creating the projects from the top down.  Then all the money stays here.  We are all starting small but thinking big!"

Seven New Mexico filmmakers will share and discuss their work in this timely and provocative schedule of films.  The selected films for this showcase include:
 
Tim Boughn - Days of Grace
Genre: Drama
Even an alcoholic has his days of grace.

Marc Calderwood & Cindy Kemp - Water Torture
Genre: Thriller
In a dark Orwellian setting, a woman employs an unpleasant memory to help her hold on to her sanity, but finally finds a moment to release her show of defiance.

Tony Estrada - Edgar's Journey
Genre: Drama/Comedy
Edgar, a Native American actor, gets separated from his film crew and finds himself both literally and spiritually lost in the woods.  Produced by James Lujan of Southern California Indian Center & Marjorie Neset of VSA Arts of New Mexico, this humorous and thought provoking short was made during a crash-course film intensive.

Genre: Documentary
An in-depth discussion from noted New Mexico filmmakers about their process of interviewing key people for their documentaries.

Stanley Ray - Undying Love
Genre: Horror
A beautiful woman invites her estranged lover to a romantic dinner to give the relationship one last chance. A gothic romance.

Laureen Ricks - A Sh'mal World
Genre: Documentary
A quirky social worker struggles to help mentally-unstable, homeless drug-addicts recover their lives, while dealing with the fact that his oldest son is on-and-off again homeless and battling an alcohol addiction.

Anne Stirling - Ron's Gift
Genre: Documentary
Renowned artist Ron Pelley's painting career ended when arthritis made it impossible for him to hold a paintbrush. Technology has given him back his life.

Brad Stoddard - An American Hero, Floyd Red Crow Westerman
Genre: Documentary
A short film honoring an American legend, who sang his songs for the earth, freedom, and human rights. Excerpts from a rare and candid interview in 2006.
