New Mexico GNU/LinuxFest update

There seem to be quite a few very cool things afoot these days. The 48 Hour Film Project was better than ever, several festivals look very promising and activity in social media and web development is really increasing as well.

For those of you interested in open source software... the upcoming NM GNU/LinuxFest is really exciting. Check out the links for more info (and help out if you can):

Hello from the New Mexico GNU/LinuxFest Staff,

The New Mexico GNU/LinuxFest is moving forward and we just wanted to send an update email of some of the things that are going on.

We continue to sign up new sponsors, the latest are Linux Journal http://www.linuxjournal.com/ , and
the New Mexico GNU & Linux User Group http://nmglug.org/ . Very happy to have both these great organizations come on board. The Linux Journal will be supply some goodies in the event bags can't wait to see what they come up with. Be sure and find the NMGLUG booth in the expo hall during the fest.

The speaker list is growing too http://www.newmexicognulinuxfest.org/?q=node/12 and we have some top notch presentations lined up http://www.newmexicognulinuxfest.org/?q=node/13 . We only have 6 openings left for presentations so if you have a great presentation that you feel needs to be seen go here
and get your presentation to us http://www.newmexicognulinuxfest.org/?q=node/14 you have till September 30th.

We will be putting out a call for volunteers in the next couple of weeks, as you know this is an all volunteer conference and without your help we will not get much done. Some of the needs we will be having are:

Session Chairs – These people will make sure the presentations run smooth
Vendor Coordination – Helping to make the expo hall run smooth
Keynote Coordination - Making sure the keynote speakers are taking care of
Venue committee – People coordinating with the venue staff to make sure all is well
Public relations – Helping with ads, working with broadcast media
Program Guide – Putting together the program guide and making sure it gets published

So as you can see lots going on, and much more to come.

Can't wait to see you at the fest,

New Mexico GNU/LinuxFest Staff

Silver City Press Release

Silver City Art Auction July 31 to benefit "Festival of the Soul"

An art auction to benefit the "Festival of the Soul" musicfest will be
held 5-9:30 p.m. July 31 at the Silco Theater in Silver City.

Festival of the Soul will be held Nov. 14-15 at Penny Park, 1305 N. Grant
in Silver City. The two-day musical event will feature inspirational, uplifting
and exciting ³World² music.

"This is the first musicfest of its kind I'm aware of to be held in Silver City
and all of southern New Mexico," said organizer Ed Conley. ³There are blues, bluegrass, folk and jazz music festivals all over the country, but I felt there
was a whole segment of the population not getting the kind of music they
wanted. We hope everyone experiencing this music will be transformed
to a new level of joy, peace and harmony with our planet.²

Volunteers are needed to help with the musical festival which will be held
Nov. 14-15 at Penny Park, 1305 N. Grant in Silver City, said organizers.
To volunteer for the Nov. musicfest, call Katie Nolasco, 577-388-2051.

Santa Fe, NM – The public is invited to attend a screening for the Institute of American Indian Arts Summer Television and Film Workshop on July 24, 2009 beginning at 6 p.m. The workshop is a collaboration with the Disney | ABC Television Group and the screening is a culmination of six weeks of hard work by twelve Native American students from across the country. Disney | ABC executives and workshop students will be in attendance. The screening will take place at the Library and Technology Center at IAIA's College of Contemporary Native Arts, 83 Avan Nu Po Road, Santa Fe, NM. The event is free of charge and everyone is welcome. Light refreshments will be served.

Now in its sixth year, the Institute of American Indian Arts and Disney | ABC Summer Television and Film Workshop is a unique program offered to American Indians who are interested in the film industry. Television executives assist with the design and implementation of projects, and academic credit is offered at the end of the course. Many students from past programs have gone on to work in the film industry.

This year, students in the writing track have worked directly with those focusing on producing and directing. Six films will be screened, including Love's Story, written by Tvli Jacob and directed by Mark Ennis; Doc O'Mine, written by Anna Nelson and directed by Aurora Coronell; The Confession, written by Melissa Olson and directed by Talia London; Kokopelli, written by Siera Ornelas and directed by Melissa McKerchie, First Impressions, written by David Gatlin and directed by Nicole Garcia; and Torn Emotions, written by Joshua Zunie and directed by Jeff Barehand.

Out of Context Orchestra -- open rehearsal this Sunday (7/12,

From CK Barlow...

All:

The music ensemble Out of Context is playing this weekend and might be of interest to any of you who'd like a non-mainstream soundtrack for your film/video project. Disclaimer: I'm in it.

It's a combination of orchestral and electronic instruments performing conducted improvisation -- our conductor uses about 40 different hand signals to cue different musical gestures from one or more of us at a time -- and for that reason is also pretty cool to watch itself.

We've been together since '97; we performed a live soundtrack for the 1932 version of "Peter Pan" as part of the Taos Film Fest a few years back; we've also recorded soundtracks for theater and video productions; we've accompanied a slide show of Edward Weston's photography at the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe. Which is all to say, it's not your ordinary band.

Most recently our conductor, Dino J.A. Deane, is mentioned in the current issue of Electronic Musician magazine; he just returned from touring with Jon Hassell to such venues as Carnegie Hall.

Vital stats:

This Sunday, 7/12, noon-3pm
High Mayhem Studio is located at:
2811 Siler Ln
Santa Fe, NM  87505

Suggested donation $5-$10 to High Mayhem.
Out of Context will play for free.
