State Fair Adds Video Art to the 2009 Arts Exhibition

State Fair Adds Video Art to the 2009 Arts Exhibition

Moving image artists encouraged to submit works, deadline extended to August 21

ALBUQUERQUENM –The New Mexico State Fair has added a moving image art (video art) component to this year's arts exhibition. The deadline for entries has been extended to Friday, August 21. Says NMSF Arts Director Sundi Tyler: "We are looking for video art that defies explanation and challenges viewers to think about the moving image in ways that they might not have thought of previously. Things we are looking for include but are not limited to music videos, video poems, essay films, experimental documentaries, experimental narratives, portrait films, and abstract films."

"Our Arts Department has worked very hard this year to rethink, revamp and re-energize EXPO New Mexico's arts programs, starting with how we are presenting this year's State Fair programs," said NMSF Commission Chairman Luke Otero.

"This year's focus is on quality over quantity," continued Tyler. "And we've streamlined and professionalized everything – from the entry and judging procedures to the exhibition and sale of the art we'll be presenting this year. Ultimately, our goal is to establish EXPO New Mexico as a premier year-round arts destination, and the New Mexico State Fair as not only the largest annual arts exhibition in the state – which it already is – but also one of the most diverse and exceptional in terms of the quality of the artwork, regardless of medium."

All works must be submitted on DVD and should be no longer than 15 minutes in duration, which will be strictly enforced. Additionally, please submit with your DVD an information sheet that includes your name, running time, title, date, a 50-word synopsis of your film, and a 50-word artist biography – no more than 50 words, please.

The 2009 New Mexico State Fair is shaping up to be one of the biggest and best in recent history in terms of the volume and quality of art works on display and for sale, and this year more than $45,000 in premiums will be awarded – the most in State Fair history.

For detailed information on entry rules, guidelines and entry information, visit www.exponm.com/competitions/premiumbook.esp or call Sundi Tyler at 505.222.9738.

NMWIF Event: Storytelling on the Web (8/25)

Storytelling on the Web: Harnessing a World of Opportunities

The Internet, which began as a geeky communications tool, has evolved into a major entertainment medium. Today’s Web is a powerful venue for filmmakers, storytellers and businesses seeking new audiences and new opportunities. On Tuesday, August 25, New Mexico Women in Film will host a panel discussion focusing on original Web content, exploring what it offers to those interested creating or utilizing the possibilities it presents.

Entitled Storytelling on the Web: Harnessing a World of Opportunities, panelists will not only look at content creation, but will also discuss the professional and commercial advantages offered by original Web content. The event will include a screening of a portion of Date Doctor: This Might Sting, a brand new webisode made in New Mexico.

Filmmakers, writers and businesses that have migrated to the Internet have begun to harness its unique capabilities to develop innovative forms of storytelling, and the panelists with discuss a number of these new genres during the evening.

These Web-based forms include webisodes, episodic mysteries, branching adventure stories and a new type of story-rich game known as Alternate Reality Gaming, or ARGs. Another innovative form is the “webcam drama.” In these stories, a fictional character tells a highly personal story by shooting it with a webcam and then posts the videos on YouTube or other sites on the Internet. LonelyGirl15 is a probably the best-known example of this new genre, and many people mistakenly believed the fictional girl at the center of the story was a real person, not an actress.

Panelists for this event include Carolyn Handler Miller, New Media writer and author of Digital Storytelling, Second Edition and Date Doctor’s co-producers, writer-director Hannah Macpherson and actress Rebekah Wiggins. The panel will be moderated by Monique Anair, who runs the film degree program at Santa Fe Community College and who hosts the radio show Cinemascope NM (KSFR 101.1)

The event will be held at the Simms Fine Arts Center at Albuquerque Academy. It begins at 6 pm with refreshments and socializing. The panel will run from 7 to 8:30, with time for questions and answers. The event is free to members of Women in Film and $15 for the general public.

Comics, Games, Movies and Post: Saturday at the Abq Film Festival

Something I should probably be highlighting more is the Albuquerque Film Festival and two sessions I'm involved with tomorrow (the acting workshop with Giancarlo Esposito seems pretty cool too).  More info on all that at:  http://albuquerquefilmfestival.org/

However, there are two sessions at Production Central I can describe a bit better:

11:00 am – MOVIES, GAMES, AND COMICS PANEL with the Marvel Comics Director of Games
Production Central ABQ, 519 Central Ave NW

In this panel, Todd Jefferson (Director of Games for Marvel), Graphic Novelists Arnold and Jacob Pander ("the Pander Brothers") and award-winning VFX artist Ziad Serafi (Golden Compass, Sin City, Pirates of the Caribbean) will discuss taking comics and graphic novels and transforming them for games and the screen.  It's a pretty amazing panel.

3:00 pm – NM POSTPRODUCTION PANEL
Production Central ABQ, 519 Central Ave NW

As posted on the discussion list, this session looks at what NM needs to perform more post-production work and discusses ways the professional post business community can work together to build this important piece of the filmmaking puzzle.  Speakers include Rick Clemente (Production Central), Elaine Montoya (Zocoloco Studios, Motion 09), Tor Kingdon (Hear Kitty) and Lance Maurer (Cinnafilm).

Hope to see you there!

Eric

re:MAKE IT! this weekend at the Santa Fe Complex

From the Good folks at the Santa Fe Complex... And btw, I just stopped by their space -- the work already up is looking pretty awesome!

Albuquerque Journal North, Pasatiempo, Santa Fe Radio Cafe, & Santa Fe Reporter Feature This Weekend's Event
The Santa Fe New Mexican joined the interest in re:MAKE IT! in Pasatiempo, its weekly magazine of arts, entertainment & culture. Calling Santa Fe Complex a "volunteer-based nonprofit where creativity and innovation don't so much collide as conspire" and "the epicenter of Santa Fe's aboveground tech-geek DIY movement", the magazine featured re:MAKE: IT! in its August 7-13 issue. As the page 12 article says, "Curators David Enoch and Dena Aquilina have assembled a broad spectrum of scientists and artists working in audio and visual mediums to create a highly interactive showcase of installations and smaller works."

Mary Charlotte Visits the Complex for reMAKE: IT! Preview
Santa Fe Radio Cafe host Mary Charlotte stopped by the Complex to preview reMAKE: IT! in an interview that aired on Wednesday, August 5. You can hear her interview with event co-organizer Dena Aquilina and Complex volunteer Don Begley at the Radio Cafe's website. Click here for the full interview.

SF Reporter Calls reMAKE: IT! a Weekend Pick
Highlighting "displays from such twisted luminaries as Christian Ristow, Sudhu Tewari and Meow Wolf", Santa Fe Reporter writer Marissa Jeffery says reMAKE: IT! "shines a light on a flourishing DIY subculture, bringing together the avant-gardists, electrical engineers and computer hackers among us." Click here for the Jeffery's review.

Albuquerque Journal North Profiles re:MAKE IT!
The Albuquerque Journal North profiled this weekend's DIY festival at the Complex in an August 3 story by Kathaleen Roberts. Quoting organizer David Enoch, the article says re:MAKE IT! is "like a 21st-century fair with a lot of cutting-edge art [with] people using technology in interesting and new ways."
