Hello everyone!

We are very excited to announce that the Del Sol String Quartet is returning to New Mexico for three performances of Chris Jonas' GARDEN Chapter 1 "Night" at North Fourth Arts Center in Albuquerque, May 7-8, 2010. This will be the second round of performances after the initial very successful performances and installation of the piece at the Center for Contemporary Arts of Santa Fe, December 2009-March 2010.

ABOUT GARDEN
Garden is a three chapter series of live music-driven intermedia performance/installations developed over 5 years that use linear-immersive media (live music, installation, transparent screens and projected video) to explore expressive, atmospheric, metaphoric, psychological and cross-cultural realms of place, night time and the intersection of the human and natural environment.

This first chapter of the Garden project is a collaboration between Chris Jonas and the Del Sol String Quartet (San Francisco). The 50-minute intermedia composition takes place in front of a live audience surrounding the live string quartet within the layers of video screens, mixing live music with projected video of nighttime landscapes and human figures.

This chapter of Garden utilizes the full range of musical capacities of the Del Sol String Quartet, one of today's most adventurous and accomplished musical ensembles. The project also employs a team of artists that include choreographer, Echo Gustafson, stage director, Acushla Bastible, and a team of Littleglobe interns and assistants.

NM First Town Halls on youth coming up

I'm a big fan of the work New Mexico First has been doing over the years to help improve our state through sharing information and engaging a broad range of citizens in a variety of town halls. Some pertain to our media industries almost directly and others tangentially, but their bipartisan approach has really been useful in making things happen.

The latest -- a series of smaller events throughout the state that will focus on youth engagement -- is no exception.  Whether your interest is in continuing to grow our film industry or to boost tech (and digital media) development -- or simply a desire to improve our state -- this is a good opportunity to get involved and find ways to get our students and younger people involved too. Without their engagement, we can't really succeed -- and this is also a good way to show other people, businesses and organizations throughout New Mexico show that our media industries case as well.

From the New Mexico Business Weekly:

http://albuquerque.bizjournals.com/albuquerque/stories/2010/04/19/daily49.html?ed=2010-04-23&ana=e_du_pub

Four New Mexico First town halls will be conducted this year under the theme "Raising the Aspirations of New Mexico Youth." The nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy advocacy organization's four events are set to address educational and other needs of the next generation, starting with a May 5 town hall in Roswell.

"All young people need to know they can achieve something important in life," said Heather Balas, New Mexico First's president, in a prepared statement. "These town halls are about lighting that spark. Parents, teachers, pastors and businesspeople will all come together with teens to identify ways to ensure that every young person can set and achieve high goals."

Each town hall will feature different speakers. Among those invited to address the sessions are Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, Jami Grindatto (Intel Corp.), Michael DeWitte (Sandia National Laboratories), and Gregory Webb (N.M. Commission for Community Volunteerism).

The four town hall sessions are scheduled as follows:

• Southeastern NM, Roswell, May 5-6

• Southwestern NM, Las Cruces, May 12-13

• Northern NM, Las Vegas, May 19-20

• Central NM, Albuquerque, June 10-11

Registration is $50. To learn more about the town halls or to register, go to www.nmfirst.org. Scholarships and fee waivers are available for youth, parents and others.

Get to Know Garson Studios

Greer Garson, film legend and Oscar winner, funded Garson Studios in 1989 to answer the growing demand for state-of-the-art sound stages in New Mexico.

Housed in a 27,000-square-foot facility on the College of Santa Fe campus, these two spacious, comfortable sound stages are air-conditioned and offer drive-on access for trucks of any size. The property also has five 50-amp RV hook-ups.

A 3,000-square-foot office space is attached to the sound stages, and another 7,500-square-foot office space is located across the street. The larger stage features a 4,200-square-foot green screen cyclorama. Both stages are secured by electric roll-up doors and include several lock-up spaces. The grid system in both stages has been recently upgraded to respond to evolving production needs. Plenty of secure fenced parking and back-lot space is also available.

In addition, well-trained student interns from CSF's Moving Image Arts Department are available to work with film makers on any project.

Films shot at Garson Studios include Knockout, True Grit, Iron Man 2, The Sunset Limited, Paul, The Loop, My One and Only, Legion, Brothers, Appaloosa, and No Country for Old Men.

For more information or to arrange a site visit, contact Paula Amanda, Director of Garson Studios at (505) 231-9411 or pamanda2@aol.com

Experiments in Cinema V5.1

Experiments in Cinema V5.1 Film Festival (a Basement Films Production)
CONTACT: Bryan Konefsky, festival director at bryank@unm.edu 505.235.1852

Experiments in Cinema (a collaboration between Basement Films and the Dept of Cinematic Arts) is now celebrating its 5th year. In addition to a new regional youth program that we will present at the Kimo Theater, we will be screening 50 films from 13 countries (50% by women!) - and we will present 12 world premieres. We are also excited about partnering with the Cervantes Institute to present a program of contemporary Spanish video art at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Experiments in Cinema is proud to add an experimental voice to the current statewide conversation about movie making.

Our mission is to bring the international community of cinematic experimentalists to New Mexico to then inspire a new generation of home grown filmmakers to make movies in ways we never imagined possible. To this end, our new youth program is a testament to the success of this effort. This year, at the Kimo Theater (with the generous support of the Albuquerque Film Office), we will screen films produced by students enrolled at the Public Academy for Performing Arts, the Albuquerque Academy and the YDI Mi Voz Program.

Our event is sponsored by the McCune Charitable Foundation, The New Mexico Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities "We The People" initiative, The Cervantes Institute, and The Albuquerque Film Office.

April 10 Kimo Theater 6:30-8:30pm (free event - youth program)

April 14 Guild Cinema 6-9:30pm ($5)

April 15 National Hispanic Cultural Center 6:30-9pm (free event)

April 17 Guild Cinema 6-9:30pm ($5)

April 18 Guild Cinema noon-3:30pm ($5)

see www.basementfilms.org for more information.

YOUTH PROGRAM - Please note that although we are only featuring 3 schools in our 2010 Youth Program at the Kimo Theater, our goal is to be as inclusive as possible in coming years. To this end Basement Films is available (FREE!) to visit schools and community centers around New Mexico to both introduce students to the world of experimental cinema and to encourage students to participate in our festival programming (see Bryan Konefsky's contact info at the top of this memo for further questions about our outreach efforts).

WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS FROM ALL SCHOOLS ATTEND OUR YOUTH PROGRAM ON APRIL 10 AT THE KIMO THEATER AS A WAY OF BOTH CONNECTING
WITH OTHER TEACHERS AND STUDENTS AND TO INSPIRE PARTICIPATION IN OUR 2011
FESTIVAL!!!!

April SIGGRAPH Meeting: "The Making of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland" 4/10

One of the bigger, cooler things happening in New Mexico's digital media world is the resurgence of New Mexico's "Rio Grande" SIGGRAPH Chapter.  Connecting all parts of the state is part of their mission -- and programs are including many different aspects of media (we've already had game development and reel review 'events' with both Albuquerque and Las Cruces locations).

If you haven't been following RG-SIGGRAPH already, this is a great time to sign up with them on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=166192065528) and sign up for their new, especially cool event next Saturday. More info below:
