I'm a big fan of the work New Mexico First has been doing over the years to help improve our state through sharing information and engaging a broad range of citizens in a variety of town halls. Some pertain to our media industries almost directly and others tangentially, but their bipartisan approach has really been useful in making things happen.
The latest -- a series of smaller events throughout the state that will focus on youth engagement -- is no exception. Whether your interest is in continuing to grow our film industry or to boost tech (and digital media) development -- or simply a desire to improve our state -- this is a good opportunity to get involved and find ways to get our students and younger people involved too. Without their engagement, we can't really succeed -- and this is also a good way to show other people, businesses and organizations throughout New Mexico show that our media industries case as well.

New Mexico First town halls will be conducted this year under the theme "Raising the Aspirations of New Mexico Youth." The nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy advocacy organization's four events are set to address educational and other needs of the next generation, starting with a May 5 town hall in Roswell.
"All young people need to know they can achieve something important in life," said Heather Balas, New Mexico First's president, in a prepared statement. "These town halls are about lighting that spark. Parents, teachers, pastors and businesspeople will all come together with teens to identify ways to ensure that every young person can set and achieve high goals."
Each town hall will feature different speakers. Among those invited to address the sessions are Lt. Gov. Diane Denish, Jami Grindatto (
Intel Corp.), Michael DeWitte (
Sandia National Laboratories), and Gregory Webb (N.M. Commission for Community Volunteerism).
The four town hall sessions are scheduled as follows:
• Southeastern NM, Roswell, May 5-6
• Southwestern NM, Las Cruces, May 12-13
• Northern NM, Las Vegas, May 19-20
• Central NM, Albuquerque, June 10-11
Registration is $50. To learn more about the town halls or to register, go to www.nmfirst.org. Scholarships and fee waivers are available for youth, parents and others.
