Starting TONIGHT: "Mapping the Complex" in Santa Fe

Starting tonight -- in like two hours -- the Santa Fe Complex is launching not just a new show, "Mapping the Complex" but a longer term effort to explore and demonstrate the power of ambient computing. Want to get involved?  Check out the info and visit the show!

Calling Technologists & Artists

On June 17-19, the Santa Fe Complex will launch the first stage of a permanent installation demonstrating the power of ambient computing. Following the launch, the Complex is inviting technologists and artists to come work with the Complex team to invent next-generation computer interfaces. The first state of this ambient computing demonstration will feature works from local talent* demonstrating new concepts in digital projection mapping and human/computer interaction. The Complex will be completely mapped in digital projection, and the projections will be monitored by interactive sensors for human interaction and play through the use of Android mobile phones, iPhones/iPads, Wii controllers, and laser pointers.

For more information about working with the Complex on this project, contact Joe Abraham Dean or  Stephen Guerin

Mapping the Complex, a partner exhibition in Currents 2010, will show works each evening on June 17, 18, and 19 from local artists demonstrating new concepts in digital projection mapping and human/computer interaction. Presented by the Santa Fe Complex, this exhibition deploys an "ambient computing" environment that completely maps the Complex in digital projection.

The projections will be monitored by interactive sensors for human interaction and play through the use of Android mobile phones, iPhones/iPads, Wii controllers, and laser pointers. New works by Steina Vasulka, Jared Tarbell, Joe Abraham Dean, Rob Shaw, Bjørn Swenson, August Swanson, Cody Smith, Joshua Thorp, Benjamin Lichtner, Paul Bloch, Orlando Leibovitz, Andrew Edwards, James Brody, Stephen Guerin, Tyler White, Cira Crowell, and others will be available for interaction, and some will be featured in the recently constructed LumenScape Dome.

This event will be the first stage of a permanent installation at the Santa Fe Complex. We are inviting technologists and artists to come work with us to invent next-generation interfaces.

Saturday fundraising event at the SF Complex (see description)

From Ethan Bach of Parallel Flux:

Please join us at Santa Fe Complex this Saturday for Off The Rails, a fundraiser to support the upcoming art show Retrieving Humanity.  It will be a wonderful all-ages event with something for everyone and we would love to see you there.

Santa Fe Complex has proven itself to be a multifaceted local venue for science, technology, and the arts. We would like to celebrate this space with an ecclectic mix of performance art, music, and visual effects. You can expect to see circus acts, capoeira, break dancing and live streaming spoken word performance. Three acts will be providing music, with prettylittlepaw offering acousmatronica, J-Kind mixing 90s funk dub, and headliner DJ Dirt Girl combining electro with eclectic mixes of J-Pop/Bollywood/Thai-Pop. The Complex will be alive with video as Ethan Bach mixes wall-to-wall in the main room and Michael Santillanes performs in the video dome.  Off The Rails will be held Saturday, June 12, 7:30 pm to 2 am.  Admission is $5 - $10 sliding scale.

The funds raised will be used to support the upcoming art show Retrieving HumanityRetrieving Humanity is a one of a kind interactive performance and installation that will bring live streaming video and audio from around the world to Santa Fe. This new concept of storytelling will allow the audience, by participation, to explore and express connections with their community and the world at large. This event is brought together by the multi-media art group Parallel Flux and will be held at Santa Fe Complex on July 9, 2010.

Parallel Flux creates immersive art installations through the use of cutting-edge technology including custom-made software, motion sensors, media streaming, computer networking, installation design elements, and DJ and VJ software. Dear NM Filmmakers,

As you know, this coming Friday and Saturday (June 11-12), we'll be holding our first Film Finance & Distribution Conference (Part I: For Micro and Low Budget Filmmakers).  A summary of the schedule is listed on the homepage www.nmfilm.com.  By tomorrow, the entire schedule along with speakers' bios and specific time frames will be posted on the homepage.  One of the events we'll be conducting on Saturday afternoon is a Pitch Workshop with Producer Suzanne Lyons, which will include a practice "pitch session" with a few local filmmakers.  Those filmmakers will be chosen at random that afternoon.  If you are interested in adding your name to the hat of those who'd like to pitch your project, please reply to this e-mail with the following information:

As a filmmaker interested in the opportunity to pitch that day, you will need to:

-Be registered for the Conference (see NMFO website for RSVP info);

-Be present for the entire pitch workshop on Saturday (currently scheduled from 4:30-6:30p);

-Present your pitch in two minutes or less;

-Be open to constructive feedback from our panelists.

As we'll be conducting the pitch workshop first, you'll learn a great deal of information and helpful tips for pitching prior to the mini-pitch.  We welcome all who are interested to give it a shot.  I think you'll all find this year's entire conference to be a wonderful forum for of information for local filmmakers.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

Finally, a reminder that the NM Film Office will be conducting FILM TOURS around the state this week and next.  Tobi Ives will be in Jicarilla Pueblo and Taos this week, while I'll be visiting Silver City, Mescalero Apache and Valencia County next week.  Anyone who is interested in learning about film training programs (above and below the line) and various job opportunities in the NM film industry should attend.  All presentations are free and open to the public.  See below for schedule:

The XD Group

The XD Group was formed by Dr. Woohoo (http://www.drwoohoo.com) with the need to either disseminate or create innovative and open-source approaches that solve challenges within the realm of Experiential Art + Design (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Experience_design) in a format that is conducive to learning. The group meets on a monthly basis where each workshop begins with a 10 min presentation by the expert outlining the current challenge and solution, if applicable, followed by a collaborative workshop where the audience learns how to resolve the challenge with the help of the expert and/or participates in solving the problem at hand. Taking an agnostic approach to the development tools & frameworks, the XD Group embraces open-source frameworks (openFrameworks, Cinder, processing, HYPE, RhinoScript, etc.) that can be leveraged over time and across multiple mediums, platforms, surfaces and machines.
