Recognizing Women in Technology

Hi everyone...

Given the importance of technology in media -- and the outstanding contributions women are making in digital media -- we'd like to make sure to involve New Mexico's media industries as well in the NM Tech Council's Women in Technology event this November.

Thanks and best wishes,

Eric

I think all of us know some great women working in Technology, but for whatever reason women are under-represented in tech industries and job roles today. Moreover, the continued low rates of young women entering engineering and science programs in our schools means that this situation is not getting better. It may even get worse.

Our annual Women in Technology event is one key way the Tech Council tries to address this. By offering scholarships to women entering technology programs and highlighting the achievements of potential female role models, we hope to inspire our girls and young women with the possibility of going on to satisfying work in technology careers.  We're also glad to build awareness of the essential roles many women play in moving our technology community forward.

Of course, we need your help to do so. Please consider taking one or more of the following actions to recognize and continue to build the impact of Women in Technology here in New Mexico:

NOMINATE A STUDENT

We are currently accepting nominations for female students in their senior year attending a New Mexico High School with a deadline of October 15th. Nominees should be students who, through their educational and extra-curricular pursuits, display their intent to pursue an information technology oriented career. More information and the online nomination form is at:  https://nmtechcouncil.site-ym.com/?page=WITScholarship

NOMINATE AN HONOREE

Help us identify and recognize the exceptional women who are leading the way in New Mexico technology - and providing inspiration for not only our young women, but for the community as a whole.  Visit https://nmtechcouncil.site-ym.com/?page=3rdWIT to learn more and submit an online nomination.

PARTICIPATE IN OUR EVENT

Our 3rd Annual recognition ceremony will be held the morning of Thursday, November 4th at Albuquerque's Marriott Pyramid North, with breakfast and great speakers. We hope you can join us for this excellent event - and possibly consider having your company or organization purchase a table.  Registration information is available at: http://nmtechcouncil.site-ym.com/events/event_details.asp?id=114341

SUPPORT WOMEN IN TECHNOLOGY

The Tech Council is still looking for sponsorship and other support for scholarships, defraying the cost of the event - and making it happen in general. We can't do it without you.  If your business or organization can sponsor the event, please visit https://nmtechcouncil.site-ym.com/?page=WITSponsorship to sign up. We've also heard from several individuals who would like to help, but at a lower level.  Please contact me directly at eric@nmtechcouncil.org if you'd like to make an individual donation.  We also need help staffing the event and supporting the work of our event committee.  If you think you can provide some time - or have other thoughts on how you can help, please let me know.

Otherwise, you can also help by spreading the word. Please share this email with others you think might know worthy students or potential nominees, and link up with us on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/nmtechcouncil) and twitter (http://www.twitter.com/nmtechcouncil) to spread the word there as well.

Thanks in the meantime, and we hope to see you at our Women in Technology event in November.

THIS JUST IN: INDIE Q at the KiMo! (9/20)

Very cool news from Jesse and the folks at Indie Q.  The team they're showcasing in their kick-off event at the Kimo is a great one to represent the talent and drive of New Mexico's filmmakers - erw
___

Good morning, Indie Q. We have some very exciting news to share with you!

The Albuquerque Film Office and the KiMo Theatre are excited to present: Indie Q at the KiMo! This bi-monthly event will be a showcase for locally-made, independent film.

Please join us on Monday, September 20th @ the KiMo as we show Never Land, Journal of Mr. Willaby, and Pascal's Bullet (descriptions below).

Please RSVP to jherron@cabq.gov.

Indie Q at the KiMo
Monday, September 20th
6:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Cost: FREE! (popcorn & drinks will be sold)
KiMo Theatre - 423 Central Ave. NW 87102

TEAM BIO:
Joshua Sallach and James Kwan have been the driving and creative force behind 3 recent Albuquerque films:  "The Journal of Mr.Willaby" (2009), "Pascal's Bullet" (2010), and "Never Land" (2010). The pair's first loves are directing and cinematography, respectively, but in true indie spirit they have been known to write, produce and edit as well. The two feel strongly that the strength of their filmmaking is due to the production team and crew they've been able to bring together for each project. The collaborative nature of their projects enables them to learn from and grow with other talented filmmakers in the community.

Joshua and James hope to continue strengthening their filmmaking chops with their latest endeavor, "Under The Stairs", by drawing from the growing pool of talented filmmakers and artists they have had the privilege of working with on previous projects. More information about "Under the Stairs" can be found at "http://www.indiegogo.com/Under-the-Stairs".

NEVER LAND:
Aimee Dent has had to grow up fast. She is raising her little brother on her own Just when she is feeling overwhelmed by the responsibility, her life is changed forever when she meets Peter, an adolescent boy who reminds her what it's like to be a kid again. However, after seeing Peter and the group of vagabond orphans he cares for, she learns Peter's secret: he can never grow up...

'Never Land' is a modern retelling of J.M. Barrie's classic story, Peter Pan, showing the struggles that come from growing up way too fast . . . or not fast enough.

JOURNAL OF MR. WILLABY:
Aidan Wilcox, a willful pre-teen foster boy, is looking for a way to earn some extra cash during his spring break. Meeting Mr. Willaby, an African-American war hero, at first doesn't seem like it'll pay the big bucks, until he learns of Mr. Willaby's journal, a book that contains future events already documented.   Aidan decides it might be worth stealing a peak - an act that could have dire consequences.

The Journal of Mr. Willaby is a dramatic short film, set in the present day. The story depicts the helter-skelter life in a New Mexico foster home and, through the relationship between a boy and a decorated veteran, the unexpected impact of knowing too much, or too little, about one's own future.

PASCAL'S BULLET:
In the dry heat of the New Mexican desert, lawman Ethan Washburn tracks a killer to an abandoned Old Route 66 diner. There he discovers six bounty hunters shot dead and a fugitive named Asa, accompanied by an empty six-shooter and a bottle of bourbon, slowly bleeding to death in a booth. As years of pursuit now come to a close, Asa invites Ethan to join him to reminisce over one last drink, one last reckoning of his crimes, and one final showdown.

TEDxABQ this Saturday!

This Saturday marks the second TEDx event in New Mexico ("TEDx" refers to TED-style and sanctioned events produced elsewhere) - and it looks like a great line-up, representing some of New Mexico's most creative talents.

Among them are several who are important to us in the Media Industries -- a quick shout-out to Ideum's Jim Spaddacini, the Fractal Foundation's Jonaathon Wolfe and Maggie Macnab from Macnab Design.  But you really need to look at the line-up at: http://tedxabq.com/

Price is a bit steep, but several organizations (like the NM Tech Council, NM AdFed and NM AIGA have discount codes).  Bringing people together for great discussion is the essence of TED -- hope to see you there!

Getting Into the Game Industry 9/25

Hi again everyone...

I think you've seen information on the NM Filmmakers Program's use of the NMCAC Gateway system for sharing information on the New Visions Contract Grant program (this coming week).  It's one of a number of events going on to share information - and the talents of various media producers - throughout the state.

On Saturday, September 25th, New Mexico's "Rio Grande" IGDA Chapter (that's the International Game Developers Association) teams up with Rio Grande ACM SIGGRAPH to present a talk and one-on-one review sessions about getting into the Game Industry.  Most information is below and at http://getinthegame-nm.eventbrite.com/ We already have sites in Albuquerque, Las Cruces and Ruidoso (with plans to present content from the recent New Mexico Game Jam and more), and would like to see other NMCAC sites come on board as well.  (Please drop me a line at eric@nmtechcouncil.org if you're interested in setting something up.)

Looking to get a start in the gaming business?  Learn what you'll need to compete for jobs, get noticed by industry pros, and make a living out of making fun.

Join us for our special September event to learn more about getting into the game industry from industry pro Dana Hanna. We'll also have opportunities for developers to share video and/or playables for one-on-one feedback.

ABOUT DANA HANNA:

Sometime in the early 1990s, Dana discovered that some people would actually pay her to produce and design games.  She's spent the twenty or so years since taking advantage of this lunacy.  Her experience ranges from CD-i to Xbox 360 / Kinect, from downloadable casual to massively multiplayer, and from software for your robot dog to first-person shooters.  She's shipped more titles than she can remember for a variety of publishers, including Electronic Arts, Sony, Valve, and Microsoft.

Dana specializes in the business, development, and community aspects of online multiplayer games across all platforms and genres.  She's currently Senior Producer at Hidden Path Entertainment, working on super-nifty but secret stuff.

Governor Bill Richardson Announces

New Visions/New Mexico Seminars via the Supercomputer Gateways

Free, interactive seminars offered around the state for upcoming

NM Filmmakers Program

SANTA FE – Governor Bill Richardson today announced that the New Mexico Film Office will be utilizing the state's Supercomputer Gateway portals to conduct free seminars about preparing a New Visions/New Mexico contract award proposal on Wednesday, September 15th and Friday, September 17th at 5:30pm.  These virtual seminars will take place at seven (7) higher educational institutions around the state, including Carlsbad, Farmington, Grants, Las Cruces, Las Vegas, Ruidoso and Santa Fe. The 28 Gateways are located at colleges and universities across New Mexico and are connected using high-definition video-conferencing to create a virtual classroom environment as well as a 3D capability that can be utilized for education, digital media and economic development.

"One of my most important objectives in creating these portals was to provide people from virtually every corner of the state with access to this cutting edge technology and the many benefits and opportunities it offers," said Governor Richardson. "Hopefully this will encourage more New Mexico filmmakers to participate and submit their proposals for the New Visions/New Mexico program."

Governor Richardson announced the call for proposals for the 2010-2011 New Visions/New Mexico contract award funding on August 31st.  The competition is a project of the New Mexico Filmmakers Program at the state Film Office.  Now in its fifth year, the program will award a total of $100,000 (up to $20,000 per project) to local filmmakers to help fund their original narrative, documentary, animation and experimental film projects.  In exchange for state funding, applicants are required to provide professional services to the state as part of their contract, such as training other New Mexicans in the industry by providing workshops, mentorship and internships, public lectures or screenings – all free of charge to state residents.

"The New Visions/New Mexico initiative has helped encourage and support some of the state's most talented filmmakers, and in many cases has given them a boost to the next level," added Lisa Strout, Director of the New Mexico Film Office.  "Our main goal is to help local filmmakers succeed in a globally competitive business."

THATCamp New Mexico (October 2-3)

Quick reminder that THATCamp New Mexico is running October 2nd and 3rd at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque -- and there's still time to sign up (an initial set of session topics is being taken through tomorrow (9/10) to help generate thought and discussion.

What is THATCamp?  Part of that's covered below, but there'll also be a pre-conference Wed Tech at the Santa Fe Complex to talk a bit more about how unconferences work and discuss THATCamp New Mexico in general (info at http://wedtech092210.eventbrite.com)

From the NM Department of Cultural Affairs:

New Mexico digital humanists take note: THATCamp is coming to town. On October 2-3, 2010, THATCamp will be held at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque. Don't miss it! For more information visit our website at www.thatcampnewmexico.org <http://www.thatcampnewmexico.org/> .

What is THATCamp?

THATCamp (The Humanities and Technologies Camp) is an "unconference" where humanists and technologists meet to work together for the common good.  An "unconference" is "a facilitated, participant-driven conference centered around a theme or purpose." Unconferences are not spectator events. Participants are involved from the schedule creation to the wrap-up session, and actively present, discuss, and collaborate with fellow participants.

Why THATCamp New Mexico?

New Mexico's rich heritage in the arts, culture, and sciences make it prime THATCamp territory. THATCamp New Mexico is the beginning of a new collaborative digital humanities community. We are a diverse group united in our commitment to the creative use of technology to communicate New Mexico's stories, from ancient times to the present, and to reconnect all New Mexicans to the spirit of innovation that spans our history from the oldest Clovis point through the development of the atomic bomb and the founding of Micro-soft.

No Suits, No Papers. What Do You do?

Show, tell, collaborate, share, and walk away inspired. Sessions at THATCamp New Mexico might range from software demos to training sessions to discussions of research findings. The thing you won't see is people standing up and reading full blown papers.

Still a little unsure as to what you might want to propose?  To get an idea of the scope of topics check out the blog for the original THATCamp <http://thatcamp.org/2009/blog/>  or some of the regional camps (THATCamp Columbus <http://thatcampcolumbus.org/> , THATCamp Pacific Northwest <http://www.thatcamppnw.org/> , or THATCamp Austin <http://www.thatcampaustin.org/> ).  Don't feel limited by these topics, however. Anything is fair game if it falls under the categories of humanities and technology, and impacts you, your organization, or the field of digital humanities.

How do I Register?

Easy!  Just go to the Registration section of this website (www.thatcampnewmexico.org <http://www.thatcampnewmexico.org/> ), fill in the form, and you are good to go. Unfortunately, we can only accept a max of 100 people, so we're going to have to do some vetting.  If you've got any questions about applying, contact us.  Deadline for submitting is September 3, 2010.

Attendance at THATCamp New Mexico is free, however, a donation of $25 is requested from all attendees to cover meals, snacks, and supplies.

How Can I Help?

THATCamp New Mexico is participant run, and we're always looking for folks who are willing to help out. If you can volunteer some of your time, let us know when you register or contact Mimi Roberts <mailto:mimi.roberts@state.nm.us>  for more info.

THATCamp is being sponsored by NMHU's Media Arts Department, the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, and the New Mexico Association of Museums, but we are still in need of more sponsorships! Contact Mimi Roberts <mailto:mimi.roberts@state.nm.us?subject=A%20Question%20AboutTHATCamp>  if your company or organization would like to sponsor THATCamp New Mexico.

SF_X WedTech TODAY: Rob and Chris Shaw: Adding Emotional Presence to Digital Interactions

** TODAY **

TITLE: Adding Emotional Presence to Digital Interactions
SPEAKERS: Rob and Chris Shaw

LOCATION: 12:30p - 1:30p Santa Fe Complex, 632 Agua Fria, Main Commons

RSVP here and order lunch if you're interested:
 http://wedtech090810.eventbrite.com/

ABSTRACT: In social networking we digitally define a public persona to expand the breadth of our exposure within the electronic social commons.  A next step in this evolution will be the expansion of the emotional bandwidth, or depth of interactions within this emerging digital/social realm.

In this introductory meeting, we will be seeking input into a new software approach to defining the digital/social realm.  We are designing a 3D interactive world from the ground up to maximize free, emotive communication and artistic expression.

THE CURRENT STATE

Today's representations of a digital self (facebook, twitter, etc) primarily rely on old technology vehicles of text, photos and video.  When the 3D medium is used for social interactions (second life, sims, etc.) the virtual space created uses technologies closely derived from traditional gaming engines.  The problem is these engines primarily enable navigation (rather than communication), their underlying software optimizes the number of players interacting (rather than the quality of individual interactions), they maximize the number of places you can go using pre-determined, canned representations of objects (rather than maximizing the richness of environments using spontaneous computer-generated beauty), etc, etc, etc.

The environments these engines create are the mini-malls of the virtual world.  Omnipresent.  Bland.  Oppressive.

The engines themselves are stitched-together using assumptions and conventions mindlessly borrowed from the highly profitable virtual war machine.  Our firm belief is that as artists and innovators we can do better.  That within the Santa Fe Complex we can build on a shared system of values and priorities and build a new virtual world together from the ground up.  And that the progress of computer hardware, streaming bandwidth, and social use of technology have all reached a critical point where there now exists a unique opportunity to us together to positively re-define our interactive world.

Discussions will include:
- Re: the present - demonstration of the work done so far.
- Re: the future: potential directions for development.
- Re: the Complex - integration of future development within existing structure.
- Re: the World - the current status of the field – existing work, potential alliances.
- Re: the $ - discussion of revenue model, business structure and compensation.

Governor Bill Richardson Announces Second Annual

New Mexico Music in Film Summit

(Santa Fe) – Governor Bill Richardson today announced the 2010 NM Music in Film Summit which will take place September 24th at the Lensic Theatre in Santa Fe.  This free event marks the second annual summit of its kind and will be co-hosted by the NM Music Commission/Department of Cultural Affairs, NM Film Office and NM Tourism Department.

Music, television and film professionals from around the country will be in attendance to speak with locals about the music in film industry and will cover topics such as working in the industry, the GRAMMY® process, music licensing for films, mechanics and contracts.  The state has been working with the Recording Academy Los Angeles Chapter to coordinate the summit and speakers.   Five panelists who will speak have worked on major motion picture soundtracks such as Avatar, Walk the Line, Moulin Rouge, Sex & The City 2 and Grey's Anatomy.  They include:

  • Mike Knobloch (President, Film Music & Publishing, Universal Pictures)
  • Julia Michels (Music Supervisor, Format Entertainment)
  • Lizzy Moore (West Regional Director, The Recording Academy)
  • Alexandra Patsavas (President/CEO, Chop Shop Music)
  • Randy Spendlove (President, Motion Picture Music, Paramount Pictures)

Panelists Biographies are listed on www.newmexicomusic.org

"We have hundreds of remarkably talented, diverse musicians in New Mexico.  This is an incredible opportunity for them to learn about the music in film business from industry leaders and further their knowledge in this field," said Governor Richardson.

This event provides an opportunity for the industry leaders to see first hand what is happening in the film, television and music business in New Mexico.  Last year, we had the VP of Music and Soundtracks at Disney Channel participate in the summit.  Less than a year later Disney is shooting a musical in the state," says Lizzy Moore, West Regional Director of the Recording Academy Los Angeles Chapter.

Locals will also learn how the Recording Academy operates and what it takes to win a GRAMMY®  award.  New Mexico Music Commission Executive Director Nancy Laflin explained that the summit is specifically tailored to New Mexicans, and that while this is not an auditioning event, there will be areas in the lobby for musicians to drop off their music for visiting panelists.

No RSVP process is necessary for those interested in attending.  Seating at the Lensic will be provided on a first come, first served basis.
